The Greatest Story Ever Told, Almost

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

This is a bit lengthy, but worth it…

Let’s start with the biggest, and perhaps least exciting, races for the county (state races to follow tomorrow). In the 50th Dem Primary Francine Busby was selected as the Democrat nominee to lose to Brian Bilbray once more. I don’t think Busby was celebrating her victory, I searched for police reports and couldn’t find any so I guess she called it an early night.

In a stunning turn of events, just days before the California primary, Sheriff Gore appears to have embellished his FBI exploits. Statements like “I stormed hijacked planes, I did all that stuff,” could have been exaggerated and needs further explanation.

The emotional aspects of the San Diego County Sheriff’s race may have caused Gore, the current appointed caretaker of the Sheriff’s office, to misspeak or embellish his background as an agent with the FBI.

The NRA’s “Anti-Endorsement” in Sheriff’s Race

You can’t find an intersection in San Diego that isn’t plastered with the name of at least one of the three candidates for the office of Sheriff. The attention given to this race is not surprising since there is no elected incumbent for the highest law enforcement position in the county.

We’ve seen some unusual twists and turns with some interesting endorsements over the last two years. The latest twist is an anti-endorsement, for lack of a better term. A notice has been issued from the lobbying arm of the National Rifle Association, the Institute for Legislative Action (ILA) authored by Executive Director Chris Cox. The alert does not endorse one candidate over another; rather it implores San Diego voters to “Vote Against Appointed Sheriff Gore!”

The Lincoln Club of San Diego County has posted its complete list of ballot recommendations.  If you’re a new reader or need a little refresher, the Lincoln Club is a fiscally conservative organization dedicated to the goal of advancing free market principles and ideas by recruiting, endorsing, and supporting business-friendly candidates, regardless of party affiliation. Lincoln Club members assess whether a candidate is committed to responsible public policy, the expansion of economic opportunity, and promoting an enhanced quality of life.

10News Poll has Gore, La Suer, Duffy 1, 2, 3 in Sheriff Race

From 10News, in case you missed it…

“…in the new poll released Tuesday, Gore had 26 percent of the vote — up 12 points from November … showed former Undersheriff and Assemblyman Jay La Suer at 16 percent, which was unchanged from November.  Sheriff’s Lieutenant Jim Duffy, who led the race in November, is at 15 percent — down nine percent.”

More here:

Thoughts:

  • 10News calls this lead by Gore “substantial.”  Ten points with margins of error and nearly forty percent undecided is substantial?  Funny.

The Union-Trib’s Craig Gustafson just tweeted this…

Registrar of Voters officially rejects Jim Duffy’s bid to be called “Sheriff’s Lt.” on ballot as he tries to unseat Sheriff Bill Gore.

My sources confirm that is the case, although the letter has not gone from the ROV to Duffy as of yet.

Toni Atkins, Developer. What?

A few days ago I raised some questions about interesting ballot titles and over the past few days I have received some answers, some more hysterical than others.

It looks like I do have my answer about Toni Atkins being a “small businesswoman”. She backs up her claim by listing herself as a Senior Principle at LeSar Development Consultants. My questions now become did she take a salary for this while on the City Council and if so does she list it in her economic interests as influencing her votes on the City Council? Is she a registered lobbyist with the City now? Did she exchange votes on the Council for a position? We’ll just have to wait and see…

From today’s Sunday San Diego at the FlashReport…

The first competitive San Diego County Sheriff’s race since 1994 enters its primary leg with three hopefuls to appear on the ballot. As well, a challenge has been filed over one candidate’s chosen ballot description.

The pool of anticipated competitors narrowed from four on Friday, when perennial candidate Bruce Ruff dropped his bid in passive fashion, simply not filing any nominating paperwork by the deadline after he campaigned for several months.

The three remaining candidates each have law enforcement experience.  Obviously, they want to tout their respective backgrounds.  Thus, their chosen ballot designations…

Well the filing deadline for office has come and gone and there were definitely quite a few interesting developments, some of which have been discussed here and some haven’t, and obviously everything is tentative before signatures are verified.

The Sheriff race narrowed to three with Gore, Duffy, and LaSuer. The big question here is where do the Democrats and Independents go and can Gore survive June? I think if Gore grabs 40% in June he’ll win in November, if not we might have a new Sheriff in town (too easy?). The good news is that no matter who wins the seat will stay in the hands of a Republican.

Sheriff’s Race Dwindles to Three

Unless Bruce Ruff plans on walking into the Registrar of Voters, paying his filing fee, taking out his nomination form, and returning with 20 signatures in the next half-hour, he’s out.

Let’s put it this way.  He’s out.

For a guy whose campaign kept promising information that would blow the top off the race, Ruff’s campaign ends rather quietly.

It makes things  just a little less lively, not having Ruff as the campaign side show.

Count Jim Duffy, Bill Gore, and Jay La Suer left standing.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore received the endorsement of The Lincoln Club of San Diego County for his candidacy in the race for San Diego County Sheriff.

In a news release issued today, Tom Sudberry, Chairman of the Lincoln Club’s Board of Directors, said Gore’s proven record of leadership and managerial skills qualify him as the best candidate for the job.

“Bill Gore has demonstrated his good judgment and considerable skills on the job every day for over 30 years in increasing positions of responsibility,” said Sudberry. “He has delivered on strategic objectives throughout his career, first with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and now with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.”

STATE OF THE COUNTY ADDRESS 2010

CHAIRWOMAN PAM SLATER-PRICE

WATCH THE ADDRESS HERE: http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/Portal/News/2010/Feb/021110SOC2010.html

FULL TEXT:

Good evening, and welcome to beautiful Irwin M. Jacobs’ Qualcomm Hall.

January 3rd marked the 157th year of County government.

We have accomplished a lot since the first Board of Supervisors rode to meetings by horseback, coach or wagon.

There have been good times and bad but we have always weathered the storm.

At the very center of today’s storm is the most difficult economy we have faced in decades. It has forced many companies to change the way they do business, and many households to cut back on spending.

From my post at the FlashReport

See the press release below and don’t even begin to tell me that aging name ID from the green-and-white-car days doesn’t mean anything.

That said, it’s still significantly early. Name ID can be softened just as significantly with financial resources and momentum.  Appointed Sheriff Bill Gore and former Assemblyman Jay La Suer have plenty of time to pick up both.  Alternatively, Jim Duffy has the same amount of time to try to translate left-over name ID into something that heads off a closing pack.

Years ago, parents of teens kept a close eye on the liquor cabinet. Today, it’s the medicine cabinet that should be under lock and key.

Nearly 60 percent of teens say they can get prescription painkillers easily in the home.

Of the many painkillers on the market, OxyContin seems to be a favorite due to its high potency.

OxyContin is a brand name prescription originally created for cancer-type pain. The active ingredient, oxycodone, is a synthetic opiate that gives abusers a heroin-like rush.

The drug can be abused in four ways: crushed and then swallowed, snorted, free-base smoked, or diluted with water and injected.

Amato’s Take on the Sheriff’s Race

KCBQ AM-1170 and Washington Times Radio Talk Show Host Rick Amato recently weighed in on a sheriff’s candidate debate held September 12 in El Cajon….

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to sponsor and co-moderate a debate among the San Diego County Sheriff candidates.  It followed the East County TEA Party, where an estimated 1500 people attended. Questions were made available for the audience to ask of the candidates. All four candidates participated.

It was a loud, engaged audience with plenty of sparks flying among the candidates themselves. Here are my observations from the debate.
