As cross-posted on FlashReport. Seems the young guns got it going on. In just 25 days of the first reporting period for the 2012 San Diego mayor’s race, two young Republican candidates blew doors on the established competition with more than $300,000 cash on hand. Early predictors felt sure the mayoral primary would be a $1 million race. At this …

Dumanis Steadies the Wheels

Erica HollowayErica Holloway 3 Comments

News just weeks into San Diego mayoral race from candidate District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis really got folks talking about her race. It wasn’t big donor dollar numbers (which we’ve yet to see), but that she had already fired her campaign manager, Republican consultant Tom Mitchell. The rumor mill ran amok with folks saying she looked vulnerable. Today, her camp released …

UPDATE: The San Diego Union-Tribune has its own story, posted a couple of hours after VOSD — the UT gave credit to VOSD. The story’s second graf says the firing means Dumanis is having a rough time: The move indicates a rocky start for Dumanis as she competes with fellow Republicans — City Councilman Carl DeMaio and state Assemblyman Nathan …

The woes of public pensions seems a universal problem. Governments around the globe grapple with these unsustainable money pits in the hopes of avoiding more trouble down the road. San Diego’s not unique. But just a year out from the 2012 June primary, we’re seeing lots of hubbub about the pension reform ballot measure out trying to beat the clock …

So What Will the Candidates for Mayor Raise?

CriticusCriticus 11 Comments

The first campaign disclosure cut off for raising money in the City of San Diego Mayor’s race is this Thursday. I could give my predictions here about what I think the candidates will raise, but then I’d have to read the whole chain of campaign partisans chanting about my bias. So, I’ll just leave it up to the readers to …

My Mayor Website’s Better Than Yours

As I mentioned in my recent Rostra blog on the mayor’s race, the three Republican candidates gotta spring from the gates to grab support and money. They need to do that by distinguishing themselves as to who they are in the race, which they can define not only by what they do on the trail but who supports them. So, …

The Mayoral race has gotten off to a blistering pace: DeMaio, Fletcher, and now Filner are in; Faulconer is out. Surprisingly, there is a swift and early movement to coalesce center-right establishment support behind Dumanis. In just the last 36 hours Dumanis has received the endorsements of both Faulconer and Sanders. At the same time a SurveyUSA poll, sponsored by 10 News, shows DeMaio up substantially. He leads among every major demographic but women.
