This morning’s UT had a scathing editorial which proclaimed: “That scream you heard just after 3 p.m. Monday was the San Diego City Council slitting its own throat.” The editorial noted the Council’s failure to override Filner’s veto was a “huge political victory in his (Filner’s) first tug-of-war with the council.” Read the entire editorial here: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/feb/11/port-commission-filner-veto-gloria-council/ What the editorial …
New City of San Diego Sales Tax Coming?
Sounds like it if the new Council President Todd Gloria gets his way. The North County Times reports: New SD Council President Pitches Tax Increase Neither new mayor nor council offer immediate reaction to $900 millon proposal The new president of the San Diego City Council — rising Democratic star Todd Gloria — said he wants to put before city …
Fletcher’s Early TV Burn
I’m told by someone close to the Fletcher campaign that his campaign will be up on broadcast TV tomorrow. Given that it is still a month before absentee voting begins, and he does not have Steve Francis funding, this begs a question: Why start burning money this early? Don’t you risk running out weeks before the election? The answer is …
The Fallout from the “Fletcher, DeMaio clash over mayoral endorsements”
The exchange between the Fletcher and DeMaio campaigns over endorsements has become one of the more interesting dynamics in the Mayor’s race. The UT has a good summary of it, but here is the gist: After DeMaio was endorsed by the Building Industry Association, the Associated General Contractors and the Associated Builders and Contractors, Fletcher’s campaign spokeswoman Amy Thoma fired …
Two Mayoral Polls Last Week
Last week was a busy one for polling. It’s odd to me that candidates would be polling now when we’re still a few weeks away from the close of filing. After all, someone could still get out or in and in that case your $20,000+ poll is junk. Could it be that one or both of the candidates polling are …
Two Endorsements, Two Narratives
Interesting day in the mayoral race. Both Nathan Fletcher and Carl DeMaio rolled out significant endorsements that say a lot about their priorities and what to expect from their prospective administrations. Nathan Fletcher and the Lifeguard Union Fletcher announced the endorsement of the Lifeguards union and released a “Clean Water and Safe Beaches Plan.” Fletcher is clearly continuing to advance …
Special Interests vs. DeMaio: The story continues and Roger Hedgecock joins the fray
While it is well known that Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio is hated by organized labor and certain elements of the downtown San Diego establishment, as of two weeks ago nobody in the downtown establishment had publicly come forward to attack DeMaio. That changed when one of the major downtown ring leaders, Fred Maas, was quoted in Voice of San Diego, …
A New Generation of Tax Leadership: Fletcher Receives Lowest HJTA Score Among Republicans in the Assembly
The Howard Jarvis Taxpayer’s Association (HJTA), California’s premiere taxpayer advocate group, released their 2011 scorecard for members of the California legislature. Among our local legislators, the score that stands out is Nathan Fletcher. Fletcher, who’s running for Mayor of San Diego under the slogan “A New Generation of Leadership,” has the lowest score among all Republicans with an overall grade …
The Other Side of the Endorsement Coin: Why Fletcher’s POA and Log Cabin endorsements will hurt his campaign (Part 1)
Not all endorsements are helpful. Using an extreme example, does any candidate actually want the Communist Party’s endorsement? That one may be common sense, but it’s not always that black and white. After all, what about more reputable organizations like the Lincoln Club? It is unquestionably one of the best endorsements a center-right candidate can pick-up, but I doubt a …
GOP Mayoral Candidates Jump to the Front: Dumanis Fav Among Insiders, DeMaio Choice of the Electorate
The Mayoral race has gotten off to a blistering pace: DeMaio, Fletcher, and now Filner are in; Faulconer is out. Surprisingly, there is a swift and early movement to coalesce center-right establishment support behind Dumanis. In just the last 36 hours Dumanis has received the endorsements of both Faulconer and Sanders. At the same time a SurveyUSA poll, sponsored by 10 News, shows DeMaio up substantially. He leads among every major demographic but women.
My Thoughts from DeMaio’s Announcement
For me, the most interesting thing about the speech wasn’t the text of the actual speech. Don’t get me wrong, it was a very good speech that focused on his plans to fight for the fiscal future of San Diego. He hit all the fiscal conservative points and really dialed in on pension reform. But what was really intriguing was …
Fact Check: Dumanis used “Huckster Propaganda”
The Voice of San Diego, in partnership with NBC 7, recently released their latest fact check. This time they reviewed DA Bonnie Dumanis’ statements on her own “Public Integrity Unit”. The unit was created to investigate elected officials for corruption. Since the program has been an utter failure, Dumanis has attempted to rewrite history on the reasons for creating the …
Our Transportation Dollars Going To Transit
You probably have been living under a rock if you haven’t noticed the significant progress San Diego County has made in upgrading our highways in the last couple of years. That being said, “Progress” may be a little too complimentary of a word. The truth is much of what has been upgraded in the past few years has been nearly …
KUSI Drops Bombsell on Redistricting
I hope someone else saw KUSI’s segment tonight on labor’s infiltration of the City of San Diego’s redistricting commission because I missed the first few minutes. What I did see was KUSI rip the “non-partisan” redistricting commission apart. It appears that a good number of the board members have significant ties to labor and that the commission’s lead staffer is …
