While it is well known that Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio is hated by organized labor and certain elements of the downtown San Diego establishment, as of two weeks ago nobody in the downtown establishment had publicly come forward to attack DeMaio. That changed when one of the major downtown ring leaders, Fred Maas, was quoted in Voice of San Diego, proactively letting the world know how he was going to dish out the dirt on DeMaio (while oddly forecasting that he may not have any dirt).
If you haven’t read it yet, it really is a must read.
The strange situation got even weirder after the UT followed up with Maas. Another strange exchange ensued and the Voice once again felt compelled to chronicle Maas’ bizarre crusade.
In my opinion, this situation is playing out horribly for Maas. He comes across as mean-spirited, petty, and dare I say…a little crazy. Completely embarrassing. Even the Voice’s Randy Dotinga jumps in to mock Maas as he makes a very poor attempt to walk back some of his comments:
“‘This is not intended to be political in any way, shape or form,’ Maas told us.
“Ah, OK. It’ll be a non-political investigation of a politician. Makes perfect sense! Well, not to me.”
This week things got even more interesting. Former Mayor and San Diego talk show host Roger Hedgecock weighed in yesterday for DeMaio.
The entire Hedgecock email is below. What are your thoughts? Who is coming out on top in this skirmish: DeMaio or his opponents?
I want to alert you to a nasty campaign about to be launched right here in San Diego funded by government labor unions and powerful special interest lobbyists.
These are the very people who created the financial mess our city is in – and now they are plotting to prevent any real change at City Hall to the system they benefit from at your expense. Let me tell you how…
What is happening? The government labor unions have set up and funded a special campaign committee designed to launch negative attack ads. A leading architect of backroom deals for special interests has hired a private investigator to try to dig up dirt. To skirt campaign finance laws, they are even talking about producing “documentaries” that are essentially campaign hit pieces.
Who is their target? Carl DeMaio – who is the leading voice for urgently needed fiscal reform at City Hall and is now running for Mayor and campaigning for passage of the Pension Reform Ballot Measure.
What is their goal? Hurl as many accusations as possible to attempt to smear Carl DeMaio to try to derail the much-needed reforms he is advocating. The unions and special interests do not want this campaign to be about ideas or solutions – they prefer to divert attention using nasty, negative, and personal attacks.
Only YOU can counter these shameful efforts.
There’s a simple reason why the government unions and special interests are targeting Carl DeMaio.
Unlike the other candidates in this race, Carl DeMaio is not beholden to the special interest groups launching this attack – left or right.
Carl is standing up for every taxpayer in San Diego trying to get our city’s finances back on track, and ending the cozy insider deals that enrich the special interests at the expense of the taxpayers.
The government employee unions and downtown insiders see Carl as a threat to their golden pensions and back room sweetheart deals.
Now more than ever we must stand up with Carl and send the message that enough is enough: We must take our city back.
In less than two weeks is a big financial filing deadline. We need your help to reach our goal and show these special interests that we will not be bullied. We want reform. We want Carl DeMaio for mayor.
Here is the link to make an online contribution today: https://fs2.formsite.com/carldemaio/form1/secure_index.html
The city caps contributions at $500. Please consider the maximum – unlike the unions Carl doesn’t have an endless pot of money – he relies on citizens like you. If you are unable to contribute, please endorse Carl and consider volunteering your time or placing a sign in your yard. Cindy and I have contributed to Carl’s campaign. Will you contribute today and help elect a truly independent, experienced, and capable Mayor?

Correction from Rostra admin:
This post originally indicated that Mass “reached out to the Voice of San Diego.”
Voice reporter Liam Dillon tweeted us with this: “Before you folks presume how I get my stories you should ask. Fred M., most assuredly, did not ‘reach out’ to me.”
Rostra apologizes to Dillon and our readers for the error.
