UPDATE: The San Diego Union-Tribune has its own story, posted a couple of hours after VOSD — the UT gave credit to VOSD. The story’s second graf says the firing means Dumanis is having a rough time:
The move indicates a rocky start for Dumanis as she competes with fellow Republicans — City Councilman Carl DeMaio and state Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher — for endorsements and campaign donations. Democratic Congressman Bob Filner is also running.
————————————————-
Voice of San Diego has the story.
Tom Mitchell, the ex-manager, said in an interview that Dumanis fired him last Friday. He said the split was amicable, but he wasn’t sure why she made the change.
“I had things that I was not happy with and I didn’t really have a chance to express that,” Mitchell said. He declined to elaborate.
No word yet on how much money Dumanis raised — or didn’t raise.
Kudos to Liam Dillon for the scoop.

Hmmmm. Nice catch, TA.
What Dillon failed to mention is that Tierney is a well-known Democrat.
No wonder her Republican campaign manager left. Anyone else would have done the same. If Dumanis doesn’t want a decorated war hero like Tom Mitchell as her campaign manager, her loss.
Shredder is right. Mitchell is a class act and an awesome operator. Bonnie’s loss.

Tierney has managed campaigns for both Republicans and Democrats. From her bio page:
Tierney’s most recent victories include 2008 wins for Todd Gloria for San Diego City Council; Sherri Lightner for San Diego City Council; Garry Haehnle for Judge and Evan Kirvin for Judge. In 2006 she posted wins for Kevin Faulconer for San Diego City Council and David Rubin for Superior Court Judge.
In 2004, Jennifer forged victories for the re-election campaigns of Dick Murphy for Mayor of San Diego and Toni Atkins for San Diego City Council. She helped lead the passage of Yes on Proposition F (the Strong Mayor initiative), No on A (the Rural Lands Initiative) and the re-election of Superior Court Judge Kevin Enright. She also worked on a winning ballot initiative for a high school bond measure in James City County, Virginia, and helped elect Andy Bradshaw to the James City County Board of Supervisors in 2003. In 2002 she helped win victories for Michael Zucchet for City Council and Bonnie Dumanis for District Attorney, as well as two judges, Dan Goldstein and Jeff Bostwick, and the re-election campaign of Escondido Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler.
And for the conspiracy-minded, look at this post, and read this from her bio:
In addition to her campaign clients, Jennifer consults to the San Diego City Fire Fighters, Local 145 and various private clients.
Judging by timelines it seems the picture was taken this week, while Mitchell was let go last week.
No conspiracy to be had here guys…
Some guy named, “DUANE DICHIARA” was fairly important in guiding Kevin Faulconer’s big upset victory vs. Lorena Gonzalez back on January 10, 2006.
Just sayin’.
Wait, wait, wait a second Fikes. You’re telling me that “Republican” candidate Bonnie Dumanis has hired a consultant who also consults for the Firefighters and Local 145 Unions??? And super-liberal Todd Gloria?? Does anyone else see a problem with this???

I report, you decide. 😉
Brad Fikes… fair and Balanced !
Plus Dumanis is against CPR Pension reform measure to eliminate the City Union’s VETO power for all non-vested pension benefits like Retiree Health Care, the 13th check, Retroactive Pension Benefits, etc.
No Collective Bargaining is needed just the City Council’s approval. The solutions could be endless, with special consideration to everyone that didn’t make over $150,000.
The earliest Dumanis could put forward the solution to get rid of the City Union’s VETO power is in 2014.
La Playa, what in the world makes you think Dumanis would do anything to eliminate the City unions veto power, now that we know her consultant is a full-blown union schill?
Hi Oroku Saki.
Agreed.
Dumanis will never get rid of the Union VETO, but she has Republican supporters believing she will fight for Pension Reform.
Mr. Sills,
Dichiara is good for many reasons that don’t include winning a low-turnout special election in January with a already-known candidate endorsed by the honeymoon mayor against a never-heard-of-her-before candidate.
I’d say Shirley Horton is Dichiara’s claim to fame in San Diego, not Kevin Faulconer, right?
Jefferson,
I think Jim Sills was referencing Bradley Fikes’ earlier comment where he posted Tierney’s bio, in which she claims credit for Faulconer’s win.
Interestingly, she also notes her successful efforts in getting Dick Murphy and Michael Zucchet elected. I’m not sure I’d want that in my bio.
Thank you, D7 voter, for your accurate observation!
Electing a Republican in a council district that voted 61% for John Kerry over George Bush in November 2004, was not QUITE as easy as some people would have you believe. I stand by the statement that it was a job well done by Mr. Dichiara, and against the odds.
Everyone who knows the Faulconer political shop knows that Tierney was always retained for the center-left (i.e. keep unions off of Faulconer’s butt) which was needed in this lean democrat district. She
She did her part, but Dichiara is Faulconer’s actual consultant and the architect behind his special election victory.
The story here isn’t that Dumanis hired a Dem consultant (who nobody had a problem with when she was working with Dichiara and who’s Facebook friends list includes an impressive display of local GOP “talent”), but rather that the downtown insider in this race hired one of the most quintessential downtown campaign consultants.
Being that Dumanis seems to be struggling, is anyone surprised that she went to her comfort zone?
Hi La Playa,
Dumanis has publicly come out against pension reform: I don’t understand your comment that “she has Republican supporters believing she will fight for Pension Reform.” No, she doesn’t. Not at all, actually.
Author
Sunshine says Dumanis has raised just $138,000, compared to more than $300K for Fletcher and $540K for DeMaio (half his own money). If that’s true, it would explain the sacking. It’s common for candidates who are struggling to shake up their campaign organization. Sometimes, it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Of course, this is mostly speculation. SD Rostra welcomes comments from Dumanis and/or her staff explaining what’s really going on.
No matter what Dumanis plans for her alternative pension reform plan, her ideas cannot have legal approval without a positive vote of the city unions. She will have no leverage without CPR. It does not matter what Dumanis promises in words without the needed change to the City Charter.
Dumanis wants to wait to take away the VETO power of the city Unions in the City Charter until 2014, or more likely never.
