Our little Friday impromptu trivia contest resulted in a few decent guesses. The question: Who was the last City of San Diego councilmember (not mayor) that was voted out of office during a regular primary or general re-election campaign after serving only one four-year (elected) term of office? First to answer wins. The guesses received as of last night: Linda Bernardt, …
The Oceanside Results
From my Sunday San Diego column at the FlashReport… Last Tuesday’s failed recall election against Oceanside Councilman Jerry Kern was a clear repudiation of an attempt by labor to wrest control of the city council in one of San Diego County’s largest municipalities. Fellow SD FlashReport blogger Duane Dichiara wrote about the results on Wednesday, in A Crushing Defeat for …
Assessor Race Heats Up with GOP Endorsement of Olson
The San Diego County Assessor’s race may not have the pure wallop as the already buzzing contest for Sheriff. Yet, the winner in both campaigns next year will be among the few locally elected officials that represent the entire County of San Diego (along with the DA and Treasurer/Tax Collector). Even the County Supervisors each have “only” one-fifth of the area’s …
Guest Hosting Amato Talk Tonight (Monday): 9-11 PM
I’ll be guest hosting for Rick Amato tonight, KCBQ AM-1170, from 9-11 p.m. Listen on the radio or at www.kcbq.com. My guests the first hour will be Steve Vaus, the organizer of the recall effort against Poway Councilmember Betty Rexford, and SD Rostra’s own Vince Vasquez, discussing his post here of yesterday on medical mary-jane, as well as the ongoing …
FlashReport: Massive Budget Deficit Presents Opportunity
From Jon Fleischman at www.flashreport.org… There is a saying goes something like, “Adversity Breeds Opportunity.” This came to mind as I was reading stories in the SDUT, on the website of the Voice of San Diego, as well as a great column from FR friend Vince Vasquez on the up and coming SDRostra website — stories all about the massive …
Hiding the Funding in Oceanside
Some folks are ashamed of how they make their money. To each his or her own…a living is a living. Not acceptable, however, are campaigns that hide the source of their funds. The ability to follow the money is an issue of public concern, especially if it ultimately impacts how an elected official conducts oneself. A few days ago I …
Politics and Giving Do Mix
In more than one on-line source today I noted various individuals and entities soliciting contributions for Toys for Tots and other similar organizations. Among them, Councilman Carl DeMaio, the San Diego Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, and a couple of area chambers of commerce. There are undoubtedly many others as well, but that’s just those I noted today in passing. It reminded …
Poway: Game On!
As I post this, Councilmember Betty Rexford recall proponents led by Steve Vaus are announcing at the Poway City Council meeting that they have collected about 2,200 of the 5,657 petition signatures required to qualify for the ballot. This is with only 30 days elapsed of the 120 days allowed in which to collect signatures. These are raw numbers, but recall …
Sheriff Watch: Early Polling Shows Duffy Leading
From my post at the FlashReport… See the press release below and don’t even begin to tell me that aging name ID from the green-and-white-car days doesn’t mean anything. That said, it’s still significantly early. Name ID can be softened just as significantly with financial resources and momentum. Appointed Sheriff Bill Gore and former Assemblyman Jay La Suer have plenty of …
Statement Re: ACORN Operative on Tape
From the local GOP… SAN DIEGO, November 11 – Chairman Tony Krvaric today issued the following statement following the discovery of audio recordings where ACORN organizer David Lagstein is suggesting a whitewash by Attorney General Jerry Brown of the investigation into the apparent ACORN misconduct uncovered earlier this year: We can recall the appalling videos from the National City office of ACORN, where an employee …
Too Quiet on the O’Side Front
None of our in-the-know bloggers are going to take even a short, one paragraph stab at how the Rocky Chavez vacancy in Oceanside will impact the city? How about what it means — if anything — to the union led recall effort of Councilman Jerry Kern? Can Kern and his supporters successfully turn this into a call for stability, just …
Jenkins: Get a load of chamber follies in Encinitas
If you missed it on Sunday, here is the link to U-T columnist Logan Jenkins’ piece on the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, which duly notes SDRostra as a player in the reefer madness… http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2009/nov/08/get-a-load-of-chamber-follies-in-encinitas/
The Fall of the Berlin Wall – 20th Anniversary
From the CRP… California Republican Party Commemorates 20th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and President Ronald Reagan’s Leadership State Republican Party today releases video marking historic event SACRAMENTO — Marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the California Republican Party released a new video highlighting President Ronald Reagan’s key role in leading …
Voices on Healthcare
My Sunday San Diego column at FlashReport… I attended the annual Grossmont Hospital Foundation gala last night while Congressional voting was taking place on healthcare. Some say it wasn’t a good night for hospitals to celebrate, but the Grossmont event was scheduled long ago and Nancy Pelosi didn’t ask about any scheduling conflicts. Any night that the community comes together …
Betty Rexford Changes Party Registration in an Attempt to Avoid the Party
….BREAKING NEWS…. It’s her Party, she can leave if she wants to. If you’re Councilwoman Betty Rexford, facing recall in Poway for a littany of wrongs (see all the related SD Rostra posts), and you want to avoid or at least avert a weeks-long standing invitation by the local GOP to attend a meeting to give your side of things, …
A Taxing – if not Scary – Halloween
Lots of good links and information from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association… Message from the President October 30, 2009 Happy Halloween, Friends of SDCTA! As if our tax bills aren’t scary enough, our local government continues to provide us with much to be concerned about. Earlier this month we released our San Diego region pension report which found that …
Rexford Apologists More Concerned about Disclosure than What is Right
Saturday’s Union-Trib editorial “Rexford Must Go” (posted below) was spot on, while alluding to SD Rostra’s role — via my post — in releasing the smoking gun memo sent by the Poway city manager to Councilwoman Betty Rexford in 2006. Some of the resulting comments on the U-T website are a testimony to the “hide the facts” attitude of Rexford …
Poway City Manager Memo: Rexford’s Conflicts and Interference with Administration
In the midst of a recall effort against Poway Councilmember Betty Rexford, additional compelling evidence against her has been uncovered. In September 2006, Poway City Manager Rod Gould felt compelled to send a confidential memo to Rexford warning that her “recent actions constitute a conflict of interest and interference with City administration.” The memo speaks for itself. Read it here.
Breaking… Rexford’s Husband Said to Threaten Neighbor with “Gun”
***Breaking News*** Whether or not you’ve been following the saga of Poway Councilwoman Betty Rexford, the documented harassment of her neighbors, and the resulting recall effort against her (here’s some background), the following breaking information from today really takes the cake. I am told that this morning Rexford and her husband Paul were sitting in their car at the end …
DSA Endorses Danon for County Supe…in 2012!
Back in July, when I broke the news on the FlashReport that Brian Bilbray’s Chief of Staff Steve Danon had confirmed he was running for SD County Supervisor in 2012, as well as indicating he was “100 percent in” even if it meant taking on the incumbent, the folks at Supervisor Pam Slater-Price’s office were not the only ones raising …
