Bilbray’s Call Center Needs an Upgrade

Monday, October 8, 2012
posted by B-Daddy

I got a call today from the Bilbray campaign, dialing me up from Del Mar (858-617-XXXX according to the caller id).  A young man asked me something that was hard to understand because the voice quality of the call was garbled.  I thought he asked if I was supporting Brian Bilbray, but in hindsight, I think he must have been asking if I would like to hear a message from the Congressman.  Then a recorded message from Bilbray started, again very garbled, although I could still tell it was Bilbray, having heard him in person.  I just hung up, a little frustrated.

Bilbray and Peters Race Reportedly Close

Tuesday, August 7, 2012
posted by B-Daddy

The U-T is reporting that Democratic sponsored polls are showing a dead heat in my home district, the CA-52, in the race between Brian Bilbray, incumbent Republican and Scott Peters, former City councilman and Port commissioner. One poll was at 40-40 and another at 45-45. While these are polls of likely voters, the real question will be what actual turn out will look like between Republicans and Democrats. With two huge tax hike initiatives on the state ballot, I predict that Republican turn out will be higher because tax hikes tend to bring out conservatives; anger motivates voting. Democrats will have less incentive to vote as Obama is a shoe in to take California’s electoral votes. Additionally, Carl DeMaio’s campaign will be emphasizing pension reform. Bilbray’s campaign will be attacking Peters on that issue for his votes during the time he was on the council. I believe this tilts the field against Peters. From the U-T:

Peters has acknowledged that his vote to underfund the pension system was a mistake but said he’s the only candidate in the race to do any meaningful pension reform. He has pointed to negotiating a new pension plan to save the city $23 million a year.

California tea party Conundrum

Sunday, July 22, 2012
posted by B-Daddy

As a tea partyer in deep blue California, it may seem that we have limited ability to influence elections. Gerrymandering keeps almost all House, Assembly and State Senate races non-competitive. However, ballot measures and local races still provide an opportunity to make our voices heard and to beat the entrenched labor/big-government establishment. Temple of Mut has provided a public service by previewing the November ballot issues; but I wanted to add a few thoughts on issues and races that matter in San Diego in particular.

I attended the Anti-Tax Rally today in downtown San Diego held in front of the County Administration Building. Brian Bilbray was clearly the most famous speaker invited. He is in a competitive district, as I have previously discussed. The rally started with doctors in white lab coats speaking about the harm done to health care under the law. Doctor Gary Gonsalves led off the doctors’ segment. (It seems that Obama’s stunt at the White House has made it de rigueur to put the docs in lab coats.)

What should Rostra 2.0 to look like?

One of the great things about San Diego Rostra is its ability to attract a variety of voices with different political views.

Rostra is a center-right site, but local journalists and some well-known Democrats are regular readers and commentators. With monthly hits by unique visitors as high as 20,000, Rostra has become a must read for numerous San Diegans.

Where else can you find a site that blends colorful personalities like Mighty Thor and Thor’s Assistant with political stalwarts like Darrell Issa, Brian Bilbray, Nathan Fletcher, Carl DeMaio and Bonnie Dumanis?

Bilbray to Run in Newly Formed District that Unites Past and Present

Press Release Just Issued from Congressman Bilbray’s camp:

(SAN DIEGO, CA) – Congressman Brian Bilbray released the following statement on the new congressional district boundaries proposed by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission:

“The preliminary maps released by the Citizens Redistricting Commission have ensured that communities of interest are not divided and that political partisanship is not a factor in the districts created to represent San Diegans.

Gettin’ Hot in the 2012 Kitchen

So, it’s only January 2011 and already, we’re seeing some folks filing papers to run for office. Good thing, ’cause some of us just can’t stand a breather.

[See full list of candidates who have filed so far at the County Registrar of Voters for 2012]

Of course, tongues were wagging last week when Republican San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio filed papers to run for termed-out Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders in 2012.

The SDUT announcement included a quote from Republican political consultant John Dadian, who said the early filing technically means little. But he also concluded that the “media hound” will continue building on his name ID.

Busby to Intelligent Messaging: Drop Dead

Friday, October 15, 2010
posted by Sunshine

Earlier this evening I spotted a small handful of people waving signs linking Congressman Brian Bilbray to white supremacy.

An odd and baseless claim. Only one word comes to mind, desperation. In a climate where voters are looking for candidates who will work to create jobs and turn the economy around, a claim so outlandish and irrelevant will only turn voters away.

Not surprising, Francine Busby, a serial candidate by trade, has no accomplishments of her own to run on, so it only makes sense that she would try to distract voters.

The Greatest Story Ever Told, Almost

This is a bit lengthy, but worth it…

Let’s start with the biggest, and perhaps least exciting, races for the county (state races to follow tomorrow). In the 50th Dem Primary Francine Busby was selected as the Democrat nominee to lose to Brian Bilbray once more. I don’t think Busby was celebrating her victory, I searched for police reports and couldn’t find any so I guess she called it an early night.

Chula Vista Watch: A Special Endorsement

Saturday, February 6, 2010
posted by Guest Column

by Hon. Larry Breitfelder

Recently I shared with you two endorsements that are very special to me.  Supervisor Ron Roberts for (among other things) his extraordinary accomplishments in governmental reform at the County and Former Chula Vista Police Chief Bill Winters for his legacy of personal integrity and always putting the public interest ahead of the selfish special interest agendas that are so influential today.

In addition, the endorsement of Congressman Brian Bilbray has a unique personal significance for me because he is why I became a Republican in the mid 90′s.  I was brought up in a staunch Democrat household and until about the age of 30, I considered myself free market, strong defense JFK sort of Democrat.  Over time that became a lonely and unpopular thing to be, but I guess I didn’t have the imagination to look further.

Four More GOP House Seats Now Rated Safe
By Emily Cadei, CQ-Roll Call Staff

While the outlook for a Republican comeback in the November 2010 elections is still far from certain, one thing is clear: The electoral environment for the GOP, after a year of political and policy turmoil, is better as 2009 ends than could have been imagined when the year began.

Voices on Healthcare

My Sunday San Diego column at FlashReport…

I attended the annual Grossmont Hospital Foundation gala last night while Congressional voting was taking place on healthcare.  Some say it wasn’t a good night for hospitals to celebrate, but the Grossmont event was scheduled long ago and Nancy Pelosi didn’t ask about any scheduling conflicts.

Any night that the community comes together and significant funds are raised for a local hospital from hundreds of generous donors — the Feds not included — it’s a good time to celebrate.
