The San Diego County Taxpayers calls upon San Diegans to voice their opposition to a proposal by the San Diego City Council to double the so called “linkage fee” charged to construction projects in the City of San Diego. This fee is yet another short-sighted job killer and SDCTA is strongly opposed to this increase. The Council will also consider …
Mayoral Candidates: Why Wait?
Dear Mayoral Candidates, After a month of hard work the first reporting period has come to a close. Each of you know exactly how much you have raised. Sure the paperwork might not be submitted or even completed, but you know the number. So don’t make us wait a month, share with the rest of us. Each of you has …
Confident, Determined San Diego Pension Reformers hold productive Thursday night meeting in Mission Valley
Kevin Faulconer set the tone last night, telling a crowd of civic leaders, “This is not about Republicans and Democrats. This is about what is good for San Diego neighborhoods.” Faulconer gestured to a chart showing that, if left unchanged, local residents will one day pay $500 million-a-year for a “defined benefit” pension system. “If we act now, we can save $1 …
Happy Campaign Reporting Day!
It’s Christmas Day! OK- maybe not Christmas, but it’s still deadline day for the much-anticipated first campaign fundraising reporting period and all eyes are on the 2012 San Diego mayoral race. With less than a month at the old grindstone, politicos wait with breath that is baited to see who made it rain. The “ask” ain’t easy. Most candidates say …
SurveyUSA poll understates DeMaio’s lead in SD mayoral race
Earlier this month there was a poll for the all-important race for mayor of San Diego. It was financed by TV station KGTV, but it was not one of those bogus “call-in” surveys or Internet polls. The results showed my favorite — San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio — with an early but encouraging lead over his opponents (some not …
Pension Reform Measure Would Save San Diego Taxpayers up to $2 Billion
A groundbreaking pension reform ballot measure would save San Diego taxpayers up to $2.1 billion, according to a comprehensive financial analysis released today. “Taxpayers simply can’t afford to keep paying the staggering pension costs of city workers year after year, decade after decade,” Mayor Jerry Sanders said. “This ballot measure will restore us to fiscal sanity, creating a system in …
So What Will the Candidates for Mayor Raise?
The first campaign disclosure cut off for raising money in the City of San Diego Mayor’s race is this Thursday. I could give my predictions here about what I think the candidates will raise, but then I’d have to read the whole chain of campaign partisans chanting about my bias. So, I’ll just leave it up to the readers to …

Volunteerism is Key to San Diego’s Future
Last week I announced that over 1,400 people had joined our campaign in just the first 14 days. This level of support from everyday San Diegans is almost unheard of this early in a campaign. Because I am up against the government labor union bosses and their unlimited financial resources, I know that our volunteers will be key to winning …
Sources: Kehoe camp telling supporters she won’t run for Mayor — Rematch with Brian Bilbray for Congress instead?
Reliable sources say the Kehoe campaign is telling supporters this week she will pass up a race for Mayor. That rumor has been out there, but our account is based on independent information gathering. So, if Kehoe ultimately does step aside for SD Mayor, what would be next ? The draft June 10 State redistricting maps offer an intriguing potential Congressional race between Rep. Brian Bilbray …
DeMaio Announces Support of Over 1,400 San Diegans in First 14 Days of Campaign
Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio today announced that his campaign has received the support of over 1,400 individuals in just the first 14 days of his campaign.
“As other candidates curry favor with entrenched politicians, government labor unions, and special interests, I’m seeking support from the people who really count: rank-and-file San Diegans,” declared DeMaio.
“San Diegans are not impressed by entrenched politicians, labor union bosses, and lobbyists who pat each other on the back and support candidates who will preserve the status quo,” DeMaio noted.
“I’m thrilled to have so many supporters this early in the campaign,” said DeMaio when the total number of early supporters was released. The announcement was made in a video released earlier today on DeMaio’s Facebook page utilizing Donor Tube, which allows supporters to make donations directly through the online video.
Tea Party Endorsement for DeMaio for Mayor of San Diego?
Carl DeMaio’s candidacy for Mayor of San Diego is exciting to me as a member of the Tea Party. (And no, there is no official membership, it is a matter of self identification.) He has taken aggressive stands to bring spending under control in San Diego, and gained my personal gratitude for his work against Proposition D. Further, by consolidating …
Early Impressions of 2012 Mayor’s Race
Donna is San Diego’s political rock star. She is John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Eminem rolled into one. San Diego’s mayoral primary is a year away but it comes up just about every day. So please bear with me as I share a few thoughts. Let’s call it, “Early Impressions.” Early Impression No. 1: Too many people have written off …
My Mayor Website’s Better Than Yours
As I mentioned in my recent Rostra blog on the mayor’s race, the three Republican candidates gotta spring from the gates to grab support and money. They need to do that by distinguishing themselves as to who they are in the race, which they can define not only by what they do on the trail but who supports them. So, …
Richard Rider, Carl DeMaio, Marie Waldron and D.A. Bonnie Dumanis highlight Tonight’s Republican Party of San Diego meeting
It was another lively GOP event this evening, and with SD Rostra’s own Richard Rider the lead-off featured speaker! Among those attending were SD City Councilman Carl DeMaio, Escondido City Councilwoman Marie Waldron, and San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. Rider gave much credit to GOP Chairman Tony Krvaric for his conversion to the Republican cause (see quote above) and Republican …
No June Gloom for Leaders in Albondigas Meatball Poll
Albongidas members like their politics spicy. The Mayor’s race in the City of San Diego is tailor made for this bunch and it remains the hot topic of monthly gatherings by members of the San Diego Chapter at Cafe Coyote in Old Town. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis made the first official visit by a declared mayoral candidate on Friday, June …
Fletcher’s Union, Big-Gov’t Record
The title for this post is taken from a recent article by Steven Greenhut on the CalWatchDog website. This article was clearly written in response to Fletcher’s official announcement that he’s running for Mayor. One of the interesting things to follow in this race is how the candidates, and their campaigns, cope with the harsh scrutiny they will receive over …
Poll: DeMaio Takes Early Lead in Race for Mayor
A new SurveyUSA poll reveals Councilmember Carl DeMaio has taken an early lead in the race for Mayor of San Diego. In a poll that surveyed 538 registered city voters, DeMaio leads the growing pack of candidates with 22% of the vote. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who announced her candidacy in March, comes in second place at 15%, and Democratic …
GOP Mayoral Candidates Jump to the Front: Dumanis Fav Among Insiders, DeMaio Choice of the Electorate
The Mayoral race has gotten off to a blistering pace: DeMaio, Fletcher, and now Filner are in; Faulconer is out. Surprisingly, there is a swift and early movement to coalesce center-right establishment support behind Dumanis. In just the last 36 hours Dumanis has received the endorsements of both Faulconer and Sanders. At the same time a SurveyUSA poll, sponsored by 10 News, shows DeMaio up substantially. He leads among every major demographic but women.
