SAN DIEGO, June 27, 2012 — Having trouble deciding what to buy your friends for their wedding or some other special occasion? Did the coupon for a free Slurpee from 7/11 seem too uncreative? Bankruptcy – No Pension Panacea
In the 2010 San Diego City Council race, and in previous mayoral campaigns, the idea of bankruptcy for San Diego has been proffered. However, neither Vallejo, which survived bankruptcy, nor Stockton, now going through bankruptcy have demonstrated that public employee pensions can be discharged in bankruptcy court, at least in California. In California, after the Vallejo experience, the state passed …
California to Business: Get Out!
Grimly funny. Actually, NOT so funny. —- Last November I posted on my blog http://open.salon.com/blog/richard_rider an excellent article on California’s anti-business climate — produced for CITY JOURNAL, and later published in the WALL ST JOURNAL. I failed to post this article on Rostra for some reason. Belatedly, here it is. And then some. http://open.salon.com/blog/richard_rider/2011/11/16/california_to_business_get_out by STEVEN MALANGA Cali to …
Finally Victory for Local Control
Vista, CA – The landmark ruling from the California Supreme Court agreeing with the City of Vista that prevailing wage decisions on municipal projects are “municipal affairs” governed by local ordinances, is a long-awaited victory for local control, reform and the California taxpayers. In essence, the court reaffirmed that for “municipal affairs,” charter cities are “supreme and beyond the reach …
Albondigas North County Poll: Rocky Chavez Leading in AD76
The informal, non-scientific poll results from Albondigas North County shows a close campaign in the 76th State Assembly District, but Republican Rocky Chavez is leading fellow Republican Sherry Hodges in San Diego County’s only R vs. R run-off for a state legislative seat. The former Oceanside City Councilman and Acting Secretary for the California Department of Veteran Affairs is leading …
Landmark Charter City Ruling by State Supreme Court
Today the state Supreme Court ruled that charter cities don’t have to pay prevailing wage on locally funded public works contracts. This comes after a lawsuit was filed against the City of Vista by the AFL-CIO, shortly after Vista became a charter city. We at the city of El Cajon were closely watching this decision. The impact of this ruling …
The Power to Mandate – Why You Should Deplore Roberts’ Decision
Guest Commentary by Thomas Del Beccaro from PoliticalVanguard.com The United States was a nation of laws. Unlike any other Country, we began with a Constitution that set firm boundaries – not for us – but for government. Sadly, and actually, the Supreme Court decision on ObamaCare has changed all of that. In its wake, we are a changed Nation. At …
The Bob Filner Biography the Left Wants to Hide
It occured to me that even many of my knowledgeable allies are not fully familiar with the historical degree of affiliation Bob Filner has with socialist and communist organizations. His background speaks for itself. Below is a comprehensive summary of Filner’s red-tinted political affinity for collectivist, tyrannical government. It’s clearly a biased piece, but that does not mean it is …

Socialist Sweden spends more on education than us? Nope.
This is an expanded version of a letter to the editor concerning education that I submitted to the U-T newspaper. It didn’t run, but no need for my research to go to waste. Dear U-T Editor: Teacher Sharon Collins’ letter selflessly calls for higher taxes for education, citing socialist Sweden as her shining light. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/jun/21/letters-sd-schools-teachers-labor-pact/?print&page=all She didn’t do her homework. …
Gov Brown vetoes a paltry 0.14% of state budget – pathetic
A whopping 0.14% of the bloated state general fund budget vetoed by Brown. Sadly, this paltry line item veto amount continues the California governor bipartisan tradition of vetoing almost none of the spending. The traditional amount is about 0.25% — one quarter of one percent. Jerry couldn’t reach even this low benchmark. http://blogs.sacbee.com/capitolalertlatest/2012/06/gov-jerry-brown-vetoes-195-million-from-final-ca-budget.html
Why Roberts Got It Wrong
The Supreme Court just delivered its landmark opinion in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (aka, the Obamacare case). The Court’s opinion—penned by Chief Justice John Roberts—found that the Commerce Clause does not validate the individual mandate, and that it is a penalty for purposes of standing…but it is constitutional as a tax (rather than a penalty) under the …
RIDER OP-ED: Absent defense, our local economy is awful
Today the NORTH COUNTY TIMES ran my op-ed on the effect of defense spending in San Diego County. My thesis is that, absent our massive federal defense spending (responsible for 1 in 4 jobs in the county), the San Diego economy is simply “awful.” This fact is amazing, considering that that San Diego has the best climate in the nation. …

Professors’ Pensions Restrict Access to UC Education for Poorest Californians
Guest Commentary by Brian Brady UC-Davis students are being pepper sprayed for chalking protests to tuition increases. At UC Berkeley, guns were drawn and billy clubs were used on the protesting students. While the media attributed this use of violence to Republicans’ resistance to tax cuts, The OC Register finally had the courage to discuss the root cause of the problem: Professors’ pension costs are driving …
