Former two-term California Governor Pete Wilson has endorsed Rocky Chavez in North County’s 76th Assembly District.
Governor Wilson, who served as Mayor of San Diego and as a U.S. Senator during President Ronald Reagan’s tenure, remains deeply connected with the region. Wilson built up a $16 billion budget surplus by the time he left office in 1999.
“As one who has had the honor to serve as a proud Assemblyman of the 76th District, I proudly endorse Rocky Chavez to represent the good people of today’s 76th District with the same fighting spirit and devotion to duty that he has demonstrated throughout his distinguished career in the U.S. Marine Corps and his service to the people of Oceanside,” said Governor Wilson.
Before entering politics, Wilson served as a Marine Infantry Commander in Korea. He later studied at Yale University and UC Berkeley School of Law before first being elected to the California Assembly. He then went on serve as San Diego Mayor and U.S. Senator before becoming the state’s 36th governor. Along with President Ronald Reagan, Pete Wilson is now regarded as one of California’s most successful Republican leaders.
“As governor, Pete Wilson championed the kinds of responsible fiscal policies that we’ve lost in California,” said Chavez. “I’m deeply humbled to receive his support, and his service will be my example as I represent our communities in Sacramento.”
The re-drawn 76th Assembly District covers the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista, Encinitas, and Camp Pendleton.
