The SD Union-Tribune ran this breathless headline in today’s edition:

———— COUNTY ASSESSOR RACE GETS NEW PLAYER —————-

The lead sentence gushed, “A new candidate has joined the race for
county clerk-recorder-assessor in a big way.” Their “new” candidate
is, “Fallbrook tax consultant Ernest Dronenburg”.

“Rostra” readers will remember Ernie’s candidacy was first reported
right here…. LAST YEAR (!) on December 11, 2009. That is 54 days
ago for the math minded. Here’s the link: http://sdrostra.com/?p=1600

In an abundance of courtesy, we’ll omit the name of the U-T reporter who
“broke” this story seven weeks after it was reported locally, and widely
discussed too, by the way.

SD Rostra has learned that Jeff Olson and Ernie Dronenburg, the
two declared Republican candidates for SD County Assessor /
Recorder/ Clerk filed their campaign finance reports early this
week, well before the February 1st deadline.

Jeff Olson reports $14,315 raised, with $9,411 cash-on-hand.
Olson, who serves as “division chief of Assessment services”
in the ARC office, loaned his campaign $8,125.

Ernie Dronenburg, who served 5 terms on the State Board of
Equalization, discloses $110,299 raised, with $110,122 cash-
on-hand. Dronenburg and wife Marilyn report loaning $97,500
to the campaign committee.

The San Diego County Assessor’s race may not have the pure wallop as the already buzzing contest for Sheriff.  Yet, the winner in both campaigns next year will be among the few locally elected officials that represent the entire County of San Diego (along with the DA and Treasurer/Tax Collector).

Even the County Supervisors each have “only” one-fifth of the area’s land mass.  Yet to win a Supe race in an open seat situation would take several thousands of dollars (hundreds of thousands, in most cases).

E Dronenburg for ARC

Republican chances of recapturing the SD Assessor/Recorder/Clerk
post soared today, when proven Republican winner Ernie Dronenburg
filed to challenge appointed Democrat incumbent David Butler.

Dronenburg, winner of FIVE races for a multi-county state Board of
Equalization seat, immediately becomes the clear favorite over Mr.
Butler who earlier filed a “Candidate Intention statement” to seek
election in his own right next June.

Toppling appointed incumbents is nothing new for Dronenburg. He
defeated a Jerry Brown-appointed incumbent to win his first Board of
Equalization term against Iris Sankey in 1978. He won 4 more races
for the job before retiring in 1998. He later served 7 years on the SD
County Board of Equalization.
