Will you have to check your wallet before you call 911 in the East County?

I’m still shaking my head over the extraordinary proposal by Chief Augie Ghio of the San Miguel Fire District to charge non-residents fees for emergency services due to auto accidents if it’s determined the non-resident is at fault.  Read more about the proposal here.

Gee, I thought we were all paying for emergency services already – it’s called TAXES.

I have great respect for Chief Ghio, and I’m sure his back is against the wall trying to balance his budget. But what happens when all the other jurisdictions follow suit? What if I know I can’t afford the fees, so I forego calling an ambulance and try to get to the hospital on my own?

This is an ill-considered idea.

  1. Maybe the other communities should impose an ‘accident fee’ on ONLY the citizens of San Miguel. I’d like to see an elected official from another jurisdiction propose it, even if just to make a point!
