What About the German Health Care System?

“Don’t you know that with our system here in Germany we are all treated like cattle.”

I was listening to a Leftist defend the idea of socialized medicine. He took offence to the comparison between Obama’s plan, and the failed Canadian and French socialized health care systems. He challenged his conservative counterpart to look at the German system. Not being an expert on each and every flavor of West European socialism, I called a friend who had played professional basketball in Germany. He laughed and told me a story:
He was the lone American on a German pro basketball team and their star player. Half way through his second season he felt that he was not playing well. He felt run down and sluggish. The team physician suggested he have his Wisdom teeth checked. The German dentist confirmed that they needed to go. My friend asked the team manager to make the appointment for him, but the manager laughed at him. “No, no, no, we won’t do it here. Give me the name of your dentist in America and we’ll make an appointment for you there.” My friend, who was and continues to be careful with money, objected. He suggested that surely a German dentist would be more than qualified. The team manager explained to him that even if a dentist of equal skills to an American dentist could be found, which he doubted, the system was so congested that it could take a long time for an approval to be obtained for the procedure to be preformed. “Don’t you know that with our system here in Germany we are all treated like cattle.”
The next week my friend had his Wisdom teeth removed…..in America. The team was happy to pay the cost of the care and the travel to circumvent their broken system. Remember this was the example of the country that we should emulate. What country do we go to for good care when the American system is dismantled?
