In a real Switcheroo, Rep. Brian Bilbray  today challenged his various opponents to debate him four times prior to the June congressional primary, including 2 to be done on radio or TV.  Your correspondent hopes Democrat hopeful Lori Saldana does share that stage with Brian Bilbray…. In 1998,  Saldana oversaw an anti-Bilbray website which was, uuuhhh  …… Off  Beat….  It was titled the  ‘Brian Bilbray Waffle Watch’  site,  and  included a Bilbray photo which MAGICALLY morphed into the face of  Newt Gingrich !   Remember him?   Despite Saldana’s efforts, Bilbray defeated Chris Kehoe in that 1998 contest.  It’s one thing to mock someone from the safety of a keyboard, but very different to face them and take their returning criticisms.   Saldana can hardly decline this challenge, but she must know the  Real Brian Bilbray is a formidable debater.

In a statement issued by his campaign today, Congressman Brian Bilbray said:

“The economic challenges facing our nation have never been greater,” said Bilbray. “People are angry at the failure of Washington politicians to make the tough decisions necessary to get America working again and I share that frustration. These are serious times that require serious people. The voters of the 52nd District deserve the chance to hear from each of us about how we are going to tackle these problems.”

Bilbray called for four one-hour debates to be held between January 1 and the election, giving voters multiple opportunities to hear from the candidates on television, radio, and in person. Bilbray outlined differing debate formats: one to be held on KPBS Public Radio, one to be televised on a local news affiliate, one to be hosted by radio commentators Rick Amato or Mark Larson, and one a public community debate.

These various formats allow each candidate a great opportunity to get their message out and introduce themselves to the voters,” said Bilbray. “I have been working very hard to change the culture in Washington, fight the reckless spending, return to constitutional principles, and get our economy moving again. I look forward to talking more about my accomplishments and my agenda.”

Urging all the candidates for the 52nd Congressional District to participate, Brian Bilbray today called for four debates to be held in advance of California’s June 5th Primary Election, giving the residents of the new district the opportunity to learn more about the candidates’ views and experience.
