As the evening wore on last night, several hundred people ended up coming over to the Annual San Diego GOP Straw Poll to vote. I’m in a bit of a rush today so I will only cover the top of the ticket… maybe someone else can pick up the ball and report everything else.

Whitman came in at 67%, with 954 votes, Poizner at 28% with 403 votes, and Campbell at 5% with 62 votes. We’ve seen quite a bit of Poizner down here over the past few years, so I was surprised at his showing, particularly since it looked from my novice eyes like he was actually organizing votes. Well, maybe his campaign should consider it a win… after all this is the first time I’ve seen any sort of recent poll with Poizner in 2nd place ahead of Campbell!

Other than that, no major tussles. Committee members that six months ago wouldn’t have spit on each other if they were on fire were even talking! Thanks, Obama!

  1. Also, as noted by Barry Jantz last night….

As anticipated, based on last week’s executive committee action calling for her resignation, the local Republican Party a few minutes ago took formal action to support the recall of Poway City Councilmember Betty Rexford.

As reported here last week, Rexford recently changed her party registration in an apparent attempt to avoid the GOP’s involvement in the snonballing efforts against her…

  2. The Straw Poll was held over at the Town & Country, and there were a few hundred people there but it was hard to count so I could be off.

Besides Whitman, Fiorina won for US Senate and Gore for Sheriff.

In the only actual Committee election of the night, Sherri Hodges, who is Assemblyman Martin Garrick’s District Director, won a vacated Vice Chair seat on the Executive Committee.

  3. I was kind of surprised at the poizner whitman results too – I would have thought that the GOP insiders here were more poizner. Thats just a guess I really dont have a clue. It wasnt really even close enough to call it anything but a blow out, and the poizner people were working it. Any thoughts on what happened?

  4. To tout the results of any “paid” for poll is ridiculous. To report it as evidence of activist support for the winning candidates re: the paid for straw poll, ludicrous. $100.00 to $550.00 dollars to vote? Truly is Chicago politics right here at home.

    And the REAL winner was…

  5. I wounder if touting those results is any more ridiculous than pushing results of a poll taken on a candidates own website, or perhaps in their own hospitality suite at midnight? Someone twitter Chuck DeVore and ask him.

The Real winner was the County Party, yes, we know. It was an “all-in-good-fun” fundraising event that accomplished what it set out to do, it raised money for the party, got people talking about the candidates, and got activists energized, all in all I’d actually say everyone won. What is interesting is without the major campaigns personally playing (not sure about Sheriffs) where the local party’s activists put their money…
