RIDER COMMENT: The Tax Foundation study below summarized by George Runner included the state and local taxes paid by state residents both in-state AND to OTHER states. This inclusion arguable skewed the results.
Not surprisingly, New York was found to the worst tax state. New Jersey and Connecticut are both listed as worse than CA.
But, high as NJ and CT taxes are, they are NOT as high as CA. We “lost” to these two states only because they are NY “border states” — many of their affluent work in NYC. When working in NYC one pays the highest combined state and local income taxes in the nation.

Posted by BOE Member George Runner at 2:23 pm on Oct 23, 2012
According to the report, Californians paid 11.2% of their income in state and local taxes in 2010—the fourth highest tax burden of any state. Only residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut paid more.
