It’s rare to see a life so fully lived as Mr. John Davies.
He was a dear man with a good sense of humor that served him well in tough crowds.
John was a development advocate with a vision to revitalize downtown, and served on dozens of boards and commissions statewide proving to be a leadership giant.
He lived big, thought big and leaves us with reminders of the fruits of labor all around San Diego. In addition to being civic-minded, I shared his deep love for the work of Mark Twain.
Thank you for your community service and your many gifts, Mr. Davies. You were a prince among men.

Erica,
John will be truly missed. I had the pleasure of working with him on the Charter Review Committee for the City. One of my highlights of time in the Mayor’s Office was killing an hour around the Mayor’s Conference Table with John and Governor Wilson listening to them talk about where San Diego had been and where it was going. I am sure I looked like a little kid just soaking in the grown-ups conversation.
Dear Job:
That’s likely the same reaction many experience with great men like John and Herb Klein. He was a remarkable man.
Best,
Erica
John Davies will be greatly missed. He did a lot for our community, and he was a joy to be around.
We took a moment to honor John at the Lincoln-Reagan Dinner last night:
“We’d like to recognize John Davies, a long time San Diego resident who died on Friday, May 20th, after a tough struggle with cancer – and I know John has a lot of friends in this room tonight.
In addition to his public service on numerous many boards and commissions in San Diego, John’s integrity and trustworthiness contributed to his success as Governor Schwarzenegger’s Judicial Appointments Adviser and Governor Wilson’s Judicial Appointments Secretary. During his tenure he assisted with the appointment of 600 to 700 State judges, including one we all know well- Jan Goldsmith. He worked hard to ensure that California had knowledgeable, conservative jurists on the bench.
John was a powerful ally and mentor to many Republican elected officials in this room, including Mayor Sanders, Councilmembers Zapf and Faulconer, and many others. John’s public service was recently recognized when he was awarded the “Spirit of San Diego Award” from the San Diego Chamber of Commerce. One of John’s close ally’s, former San Diego Mayor and California Governor Pete Wilson was on hand to help present the award for all of John’s great efforts and dedication to San Diego.
John you will be sorely missed.”
Mr. Chairmain:
A very classy tribute for a truly fine man. The speech and moment of silent was noted by several folks after the dinner as we recalled his many gifts and contributions to our great city.
Best,
Erica
