Confirming recent rumbles heard by SD RostraMark Powell of San Diego today took out preliminary papers to oppose incumbent John Evans for the  District A seat on the SD Unified School District board.  Mr. Evans lost the 2008 district A  primary 60% to 40% to Mitz Lee (R),  but then won a citywide runoff.  SD Rostra readers will doubtless have more details to add, and we invite them to comment below.  It is a good day for democracy when a previously unopposed incumbent draws a challenger.  This is a good day.

….. REVIEWING THE DISTRICT A  SITUATION BOARD

Incumbent John Evans (D)  can be vulnerable to a 2012  election challenge in District A   Just look at those fine neighborhoods …  Mira Mesa, North  Clairemont, Bay ParkUniversity City, East Clairemont.  That should be a Republican enclave.  Candidates run within District A in the June primary.  The top two finishers then progress to the citywide runoff in November.

….. WHAT  HAPPENED  IN  2008

The Union-Tribune of October 30, 2008 reported, “The  San Diego Education Association — with help from the California Teachers Association — has invested more than $300,000 in a campaign that includes television commercials, radio spots, mailers and e-mail letters.  The campaign  attacks Mitz Lee for some budget cuts she voted for.  It also blames Lee for personnel reductions over the past three years.”

  1. This is trouble for John Evans. Mark Powell is a top-tier candidate. How does Evans feel now about his master strategy of raising no money for his reelection campaign, as Rostra reported? Brilliant.

  2. That’s great news. Now can we find someone to take on Marty Block in the 39th senate district.

  3. Mark is both a fine former teacher and administrator, but is solid in his support for kids. I ENDORSE HIM WITHOUT RESERVATION, as a Moderate, knowledgeable candidate. He stood up to Bersin, and won!

  4. The support I have been receiving for my bid for school board is excellent and I thank all of you! It is now time for Efficient Change, and Effective Competent Leadership within San Diego Unified Schools…our children, parents, teachers and community deserve it. I understand that many of you have donated to other campaigns and money is tight, but your help is still needed. Political campaigns are made possible by the generous donations of citizens like you. Please contribute to help make my campaign a success and help me to represent you and our children by logging onto my website http://www.markpowellforschoolboard.com and clicking the donate button. We cannot have another 4 years of poor decisions and failed leadership in the San Diego Unified School District.
