Confirming recent rumbles heard by SD Rostra, Mark Powell of San Diego today took out preliminary papers to oppose incumbent John Evans for the District A seat on the SD Unified School District board. Mr. Evans lost the 2008 district A primary 60% to 40% to Mitz Lee (R), but then won a citywide runoff. SD Rostra readers will doubtless have more details to add, and we invite them to comment below. It is a good day for democracy when a previously unopposed incumbent draws a challenger. This is a good day.

Incumbent John Evans (D) can be vulnerable to a 2012 election challenge in District A Just look at those fine neighborhoods … Mira Mesa, North Clairemont, Bay Park, University City, East Clairemont. That should be a Republican enclave. Candidates run within District A in the June primary. The top two finishers then progress to the citywide runoff in November.
….. WHAT HAPPENED IN 2008
The Union-Tribune of October 30, 2008 reported, “The San Diego Education Association — with help from the California Teachers Association — has invested more than $300,000 in a campaign that includes television commercials, radio spots, mailers and e-mail letters. The campaign attacks Mitz Lee for some budget cuts she voted for. It also blames Lee for personnel reductions over the past three years.”
