Donna Frye won’t make a 3rd try for Mayor in 2012, a bombshell first reported by Liam Dillon at the Voice of San Diego. This is the “Other Shoe” people were waiting to drop, and VOSD says she will also endorse Bob Filner for the top City job. With the earlier exit of Chris Kehoe (reported first by SD Rostra on June 24) Filner’s road to official Democratic support is now much clearer. Private polling showed Frye immediately going into 1st place had she declared again, so that sound you hear is a major Sigh of Relief from both Republican and Democratic candidates! It is fair to say that the REAL race for SD Mayor begins today.
Well-informed political sources confirmed to SD Rostra that the 2012 contest would not really come into focus until the longtime Councilwoman (2001-2010) made her go/no go decision. Survey research suggests she is the strongest potential candidate Democrats could field. So yes, Rep. Bob Filner has reason to be happy today, but so do GOP hopefuls Nathan Fletcher, Carl DeMaio and Bonnie Dumanis. A Donna Frye candidacy would have taken the air out of the San Diego political room. Now everyone else is breathing again !
……THE VICTORY BEAR REACTS
The restless animals in the San Diego political zoo are MUCH calmer this morning as a result of this major development. But Please, ladies and gentlemen, another polite reminder … do not throw bread slices to the Victory Bear. He has, however, signified his own solid approval of Donna Frye’s big decision.

Frye would make a good mayor, certainly better than Sanders has been.
That’s a thought-provoking evaluation. As time permits,
can you give Rostra Readers a few key points, from a
Libertarian perspective, on which Ms. Frye stands out.
Donna Frye belongs on the California Coastal Commission, where she can do the most good. However, I am one step closer to voting for Bob Filner, if Donna vouches for him. That and Bob let Prez Obama have a piece of his mind re: the Feds hassling the medical cannabis dispensaries! Thank you to Rostra for always giving us the news-straight up.
Who better to comment on Councilwoman Donna Frye than a reader named “Surf Angel” ?
I didn’t think she would run but what a great story – she polls at the top of the pack.
Good post, Jim!
Jim,
Unlike Sanders and his immediate predecessors, Frye is not part of the club of politicians trying to build their own legacy with huge edifices that we can’t afford. That’s the biggest difference.
Our city’s financial meltdown was caused by politicians who schemed to build monuments to themselves and made bad deals with sports moguls, going at least as far back as Golding.
While Donna was more open to raising taxes than Sanders when she ran for mayor, she was at least honest. Sanders said he was against higher taxes, but he turned around and supported Prop. D with an unconscionable scare campaign, understaffing fire stations and enlisting police and fire officials to warn of deaths if Prop. D isn’t passed. Since Prop. D failed, Sanders is once again presenting himself as a fiscal conservative, which he is not.
Also, Donna has been willing to reach out to fiscal conservatives — if I’m not mistaken she collaborated with DeMaio on some reforms.
Sanders is more concerned with appearances to build his legacy. Until recently, Sanders opposed programs to recycle sewage back to drinking water. But such a program would help San Diego far more than building a stadium for the Chargers.
Donna by contrast has been deeply interested in the water reclamation subject for years. As mayor, she would have been a leader in tapping this important resource for water-scarce San Diego.
Water reclamation is one area on which environmentalists and Libertarians and fiscal conservatives should be able to agree. We need more local sources of water, because our imported supplies are less reliable, and beyond our control.
To sum up, the edifice-crazed City Hall gang has cost San Diego hundreds of millions of dollars. These people are *not* fiscal conservatives! And I’m very worried that another of their number may succeed Sanders and continue to mismanage what used to be America’s Finest City.
There is a recent book out by Steve Erie and Vladimir Kogan, “Paradise Plundered”, about the prodigious waste of tax dollars by the City Hall gang, and I’ll be posting a review soon. It’s available in the Kindle format, which is how I bought it.
Dear Jim:
I heart Victory Bear.
Best,
Erica
Hi Erica:
The Victory Bear thanks you for the cordial and friendly
welcome. His formal full name is ‘Malayan Sun Bear’.
He has been fed 3 Pomegranates today in your name.
They are better for his digestion than the bread slices.
He will occasionally be a Rostra guest commentator on
matters of special interest to the local Political Zoo.
Jim: Is is possible the Victory Bear can give us the over/under on the number of days before Herman Cain exits (stage right) the presidential campaign?
Hi John:
The Bear is getting some well-earned sleep today, but
I’ll show him your question tomorrow.
Mr. Cain continues to defy political gravity. A new poll
in Iowa shows him in 1st place, and he remains 1st or
2nd in various national surveys.
If he somehow survives this onslaught, it may be a
national turning-point….. in which the MSM can no
longer Veto a candidate with a ‘Hail of Dead Cats.’
