No, this didn’t go to every high propensity household in Council District 6 with Tony’s name on it…
…but it may have Pollie Award written all over it.

Before some smart aleck chimes in who knows that I live in D5: No the mail wasn’t targeted incorrectly. I’m on the seed list for many campaigns. 4 more days…
Barry Jantz
It must be cool to be Tony K.
What wonk wouldn’t want to be on everyone’s seed list?!
Great ad. The Democrats should have thought to use the same ad against Chris Cate.
Spin Zone
Cate missed some votes when he was 23 and younger?
Hypocrisy questioned
Spin Zone,
Are you saying that it is acceptable for a young single man with virtually no responsibilities to skip out on voting while a mother of two trying to balance work and raising a family is to be castigated for not prioritizing a trip to the polls over her other commitments?
Michael A. Schwartz
I am saying that.
A young man with no responsibilities…what would motivate him to vote? I’m glad he’s spent the last decade becoming one of the most qualified candidates I’ve proudly supported.
But a single mom has a ton to vote on. No excuse for not voting. Maybe now that she’s finally paying attention she’ll spend the next 10 years becoming as educated as Cate and try again.
D. Morton
Love the concept here.
Hypocrisy questioned
Michael,
Carol Kim was not a single mom. She was happily married long before she had children. I am sure that one day, Mr. Cate will also understand what it takes to raise a family and what actually concerns parents.
Michael A. Schwartz
My mistake on the “single mom” thing.
Everything else I stand by. Unbelievable she had so much on the line with her family and didn’t even vote.
My mom raised three kids and had a successful, challenging career in nursing. I remember her and my dad making a point to make informed votes while I as growing up (and still today).
Hypocrisy questioned
If I had to choose between someone who voted in every election or someone who was able to make a life commitment to another adult and knows the responsibility of being totally responsible for the lives of others (children), I will choose the latter every time.
Michael A. Schwartz
Good news!
In Chris Cate you have everything you want. He votes, his resume shows him to be extremely knowledgeable on city issues, he was raised by a single mother so he knows first-hand the struggles many women and families face, he started a business to put himself through college, and he just got engaged to a very lovely lady.
Hypocrisy questioned
Michael,
I didn’t know Chris was engaged. That is great news and I will offer him my sincerest congratulations when I see him. However, being engaged is still very different than spending a decade trying to balance work and raising a family. Likewise, being a child doesn’t give you quite the same perspective on the family as being a parent does.
I do agree with you that Mr. Cate is knowledgeable on City issues. Unfortunately, I have found that he mostly understands the numbers, but he doesn’t understand that there are real people and real lives behind those numbers.
By the way, are you still supportive of Mr. DeMaio and think that there is nothing to the accusations?
Michael A. Schwartz
Yes.
Hypocrisy questioned
To paraphrase Richard Rider, “How many complaints will it take?”
Michael A. Schwartz
Well, HQ, I know Carl and I know his staff. I know his staff won’t put up with the type of behavior Carl is being accused of. I know that if anything like the accusations actually happened, his staff would be out the door.
So far we have no lawyers or lawsuits, but we do have some election season mud being slung. We have a claim by a disgruntled employee who can’t substantiate anything he says…the job offer, the buy off, the actual incident, the staff’s collusion. In fact most of his claims have more evidence against than for.
This second complaint is by a guy who emailed and said he’d be happy to help Carl’s campaign after he quit, but needed to go back to school. He made this decision after sleeping in for two days and not mentioning anything to his girlfriend. Odd.
And what is his claim? That he saw a man in front of a urinal with his fly down? If that is the standard then I should be sleeping in for weeks after every Padres game I attend.
I figure I have two choices.
1. Believe that Carl is being attacked for a perceived weakness (he’s gay) in a tough election
2. Believe that Carl is a debilitating perverted sociopath even though he made it through a high school taught by Jesuits, put himself through a top tier college, started a business that was valuable enough that it made him a millionaire, got elected to a huge city’s council, and did more to help that city financially in his 4 years in office than his opponent has done in 3 times that.
I am more comfortable with the first option. No…I am a lot more comfortable with the first option.
But if actual proof or credible evidence pops up…I’m no longer a supporter despite my belief that Carl will be a huge asset in helping to right the wrongs Democrats and big-government Republicans have cause over the last few decades.
The behavior that really gets to me in this campaign is the total lack of support Carl has received from most LGBT activists. The Peters’ campaign used homophobic slurs against Carl and took every opportunity to use horribly insulting and anti-gay stereotypes against Carl and so many in the LGBT community went right along with it because Carl is an “R”. They left his defense up to Christians, Republicans, business owners, gun owners, anti-tax advocates, pro-lifers. And defend him they did.
If a Democrat in San Diego were pro gun (can’t find one so this is hypothetical), as an activist, I would jump at the chance to support his/her campaign over just about any Republican opponent. Because it is an opportunity to get Democrats to finally support the Second Amendment as it was intended. It’s an opportunity to support something I believe in. What I have learned in this campaign is that there are truly few LGBT activists in San Diego. Most are just Democrat pawns using the LGBT issue to support the Democratic Party agenda.
Their lack of sincerity is disappointing.

“The Peters’ campaign used homophobic slurs against Carl and took every opportunity to use horribly insulting and anti-gay stereotypes against Carl…”
…and I don’t care. San Diego Democrats have been playing to the worst stereotypes about gay men for three years now. This past year has been ridiculous.

Michael and Brian,
I doubt Congressman Peters noticed the “Mary” comment. It wasn’t written by him or any of his campaign staff. It was written by John Aravosis.
(John Aravosis is an American Democratic political consultant, writer, gay activist and blogger. Aravosis, an attorney who lives in Washington, D.C., is the founder of AMERICAblog and a co-founder of StopDrLaura.com. Wikipedia)
That said, the Congressman is responsible for the content of his website, the comment should not have been there and I am glad that it was taken down after it was brought to Congressman Peters’ attention.
If you believe that Congressman Peters is homophobic (he isn’t), then why do you think that the gay community isn’t supporting Mr. DeMaio? I don’t think it is just the R – Isn’t Bonnie Dumanis a Republican too?
