An Important Message from

San Diego’s Taxpayer Watchdog

Dear Friends:

San Diego city government faces its worst financial crisis in its history.  We have seen city services cut, fees raised, and our city debt grow.  The level of waste and inefficiency in city departments is staggering.

We need change – and that change must be imposed on city government from the outside by the voters themselves.

I am asking for your help in qualifying and passing a measure for the November 2010 election called the “Competition and Transparency in City Contracting Initiative.”

This important ballot measure requires all city departments use competitive bidding to achieve cost efficiencies in their services.

Voters overwhelmingly approved similar reforms in 2006, but implementation of competitive bidding has been stalled by the labor unions.  This measure gives city leaders the authority to overcome the stall tactics of the labor unions – and holds our city government accountable for finally implementing this voter-approved program.

To put an end to “sweetheart contracts,” the measure requires our city government to place all of its contracts online – and to follow fair and open competitive bidding rules for all city contracts.

As the city confronts a massive financial crisis, the measure will save taxpayers tens of millions of dollars annually.

If you are fed up with wasteful spending in city government – and want to subject city departments to some good old fashioned competitive bidding – please join us for an important neighborhood walk program on Saturday, January 16, 2010 from 8:30am-12:30pm. We need to collect signatures from registered voters in the city of San Diego to qualify the measure for the November 2010 ballot.

Thank you — and together we will create a city government we can be proud of again!
