Today’s editorial in the Union-Tribune is spot on, and I love the pocket-veto reference at the end. I made a similar argument last week.
Initially, when I heard labor and school leaders were walking the council floor trying to drum up support for a loan/advance I asked: “They want it added to the $4 billion wish list?”
“No,” I was told. “They want the money now.”
And they want it from an agency that is going out of business if the governor gets his way.
Someone suggested to me yesterday it was a smart political play because it shows parents that school leaders are fighting for them. That wasn’t my first thought.

Bank robbers are smart enough to rob banks because “that’s where the money is.” What does this say about our education system leaders, hmm?
Good to see you here on Rostra, Tony! Your writing talent has been missed since your departure from the Union-Tribune.
Welcome, Tony!
Maybe we should have given them 15 million now vs. the owed 64 Million in out years. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
I like the way you think, Aynd Rand. I paid off a loan for cents on the dollar under exactly the same circumstances. Cash remains king (or queen, in my case).
