The “I’m getting out of the Governor’s race” message I’d really like to see.

Slightly edited from the message circulated today…

I’m writing to you this morning to let you know that today I’m ending my campaign for Governor of California.

This wasn’t an easy decision. California needs new leadership and better solutions than we are seeing coming out of Sacramento — and, unfortunately, I came out of Sacramento.

Our opponents’ plans for California — as well as my past voting record — produce ever-rising taxes and shrinking opportunities for the middle class. We see the impact of these policies every day in the form of the nation’s highest poverty rate, and the lowest rankings for friendliness to the businesses Californians rely on for jobs. I can’t continue knowing I did nothing to fix this mess.

The principles at the core of our party are the foundation of better solutions for our state. Anyone in any party could make that statement and believe it.

I’ve concluded that the best way I can help to advance those solutions this year is by helping other Republican candidates who don’t share my beliefs, especially those for downticket offices running in districts full of Californians who are Republicans, but as Ronald Reagan said, just don’t know it yet. They don’t know it yet, whereas I forgot it several years ago.

As Republicans, we can be confident in the power of our ideas to transform the world for the better. Wherever they are tried, the principles of free markets and a free society produce prosperity. My consultant wrote that for me, since this message is going to Republicans.

As we begin this New Year, I hope you will join me in working hard for the Republican candidates of your choice, just not me. At every level of government we need leaders who will take our sound ideas and put them into action, unlike me. Those leaders need volunteers and support to carry them to victory, so let’s work together to back up our candidates in every corner of California this November, and put the state on the path of prosperity. It’s much better that I’m not one of them.

Thank you for your leadership.

  1. I’m a Tim Donnelly for Governor supporter but I have no interest in spiking the football. Former Lt. Governor Maldonado would have been 100 times better than Moonbeam and I appreciate that, while he and I disagree on taxation and abortion, he was willing to lay out the ideas of lower regulations and a shored up public safety for debate..

I’m thrilled that Donnelly can focus on Jerry Brown now and feel confident that he will represent our Party well when he defeats Moonbeam in November.

I’m sure we’ll hear from some self-financed, Meg Whitman moderate soon but I believe California is ready for a more libertarian Governor. That man is Tim Donnelly

  2. Spiking the football would mean the other guy lost. That assumes he was in the game. He wasn’t. I’m not sure he ever even suited up.

  3. Love Vito’s humor. Expecting former Goldman Sachs VP and Federal Bailout/Tarp Asst Treasury Secretary – Neel KashKari to jump in any moment.
