The Horror of Gun Control

This article addresses a very disturbing video that illustrates the horror of gun control. The video is an example of how dangerous laws and ignorant attitudes impact real people. To be clear, gun control laws are not intended to increase public safety or to impede criminals. Gun control laws are about power and control. Gun control laws are about exercising power over and control of law-abiding citizens.

The video can be seen here on John Correia’s Active Self Protection (ASP) channel. For those not familiar with ASP, the channel posts actual crime videos and analysis creating some of the best concealed carry and personal defense related information available online.

The video shows a woman being attacked by her violent ex who is also the father of her child. The man has a violent history, is a known MS13 gang member, and has assaulted her in the past. The woman has broken up with him and has a restraining order against him. She lives in Los Angeles where it is virtually impossible for the average citizen to obtain a concealed carry permit (CCW) for self-protection.

In the video, the woman sees her attacker pull up and attempts to run to safety. She has time to run up the driveway to the door of her babysitter’s home. Unfortunately, she was unable to get through the door before her attacker reached her and fired six shots.

The following are some things to consider:

  • Restraining orders are absolutely useless against violent, determined individuals. They may work against bullies who fear the law and are more abusive rather than dangerously violent, but they have no effect on truly violent predators.
  • This woman may have been able to save herself had she been armed. It is almost impossible for a citizen to get a CCW permit in Los Angeles County. This isn’t due to law, but rather to ignorance and corruption. California is a “may-issue” state and most counties do issue CCW permits. Politicians controlling LA County choose not to.
  • There is a ten day waiting period for firearms purchases in California. How many who were truly threatened by a violent individual were badly injured or killed while waiting for a firearm? Probably more than have been saved by this ridiculous ten day cooling off period.
  • Ridiculous and dangerous gun storage laws (as in San Diego) endanger real people. The inability to legally stage firearms in the home makes people less safe. Most people are perfectly capable of determining how to safely protect themselves in the home.

The incident depicted had a terrible ending. The victim was murdered by her attacker. The attacker was tracked down by police and chose suicide over surrender. The child is an orphan. While the adults involved are primarily responsible, we all share at least some responsibility in the outcome.

California politicians write ill-conceived laws that endanger citizens. They are pressured to write and pass these laws by ignorant, misinformed members of anti-gun groups. The media intentionally perpetuates the misinformation that fuels the fire. California citizens put these politicians in power and keep them there. Americans tolerate a corrupt media.

We choose the government we want. We create the kind of country in which we wish to live. No one should be badly injured or killed because the government denied them the ability to protect themselves. In America (and even in California) citizens have the power to create change. Are you happy with the current situation? If not, you’re path is clear.

The right to self-defense is a basic human right. Gun ownership is an integral part of that right. If you want to keep your rights defend them by joining San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO) in San Diego, Orange County Gun Owners (OCGO) in Orange County, San Bernardino County Gun Owners (SBCGO) in San Bernardino County or Riverside County Gun Owners (RCGO) in Riverside. Support the cause by listening to Gun Owners Radio live on Sunday afternoon or on the internet at your leisure. Join the fight and help us restore and preserve our second amendment rights. Together we will win.

  1. Have CCW permits been tested in court as an infringement upon the Second Amendment, especially in places like LA County where the permits are widely denied for no reason?

  2. Upon further review, the US Supreme Court has not ruled on the matter but will this year.

From the link below: John Lott, the president of the CPRC, said that “at least 7.8% of the adult population” currently has a concealed carry permit.

“We have seen the largest increases in permits among women and minorities (Asians and blacks),” he said. “It has changed as those groups of people have come to recognize that it is people who are relatively weaker physically and those who are the most likely victims of violent crime who benefit the most from carrying concealed.”

“I think a lot of the reason that people get concealed handgun permits is the same reason that people buy guns,” he continued. “This past year we saw situations where large percentages of inmates were [released early from] jails and prisons, police were being ordered to stand down or had their budgets cut, and prosecutors in heavily Democratic cities were refusing to prosecute criminals.”
