Post updated below with a statement from Peder Norby.

After just last month filing the necessary documents to set up a committee and declaring his intention as a candidate against Fifth District County Supervisor Bill Horn next year, Planning Commissioner Peder Norby recently had a change of heart.

Norby’s consultant Bob Schuman confirmed his client would not run. “He’s got a great life, job and marriage,” said Schuman. “He asked himself why he’d want to risk messing any of that up.” Schuman also said Norby was happy knowing he would continue to be involved while influencing public policy, “doing what he is doing.”

New Third District Supervisor Dave Roberts recently re-appointing Norby to the County Planning Commission, keeping the appointment first made by former Supervisor Pam Slater-Price (see Roberts’ tweet below). Norby is the Hwy 101 Corridor Coordinator for the City of Encinitas and has worked in the city for 16 years.

With Norby out, other potential candidates against Horn include Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond. See Erica Holloway’s take from March.

I March “Nice to just swear in my newly reappointed Planning Commissioner Peder Norby with his wife Julie & his dad Peder.”

Statement from Norby…

For months, I have been contemplating entering the race for District 5 Supervisor. I am fortunate to have a supportive and understanding family. My wife and children, my parents who are both healthy and active, seven brothers and sisters, over 20 nieces and nephews and one great niece.

With much thought and deep soul searching, I have decided that I will not enter the race for the 5th District County Supervisor. I will continue to serve as a County Planning Commissioner, appointed by and in close cooperation with a great man and public servant, Supervisor Dave Roberts.

Selfishly, I want to spend as much time with my wife, children, my parents and family as possible. I am reminded of this every evening and weekend I spend away for home.

The recent months have also highlighted some known personal traits for better or worse. It is an understatement to say I can become obsessive in areas of interest and removed in areas that are not of interest. I am at my best when I am chasing a passionate pursuit in my field of interests. Chiefly, land use, community development, restoration, preservation, renewable energy and transportation technology. My current positions, allow me to focus on my passions.

Thank you to all who serve and have served our cities and county as elected officials. Your service is among the toughest, thankless and most important jobs, with much sacrifice. I encourage proven civic leaders to run for District 5 County Supervisor as our County is best served when well qualified citizens who are able, step forward engaging in healthy debate in the issues of the day, providing choice to the voters. I thank District 5 County Supervisor Bill Horn for his service to our county the past 19 years.

  1. Hi Barry, small correction, I am the Hwy 101 Corridor Coordinator for the city of Encinitas and have worked in Encinitas for 16 years. It’s a very cool city.

For months, I have been contemplating entering the race for District 5 Supervisor. I am fortunate to have a supportive and understanding family. My wife and children, my parents who are both healthy and active, seven brothers and sisters, over 20 nieces and nephews and one great niece.

  2. Barry gave me some good advice a few years ago when I considered running for Poway City Council (No, he did not say “You’re a fool if you run”). He said that if you’re happy with how the City is run, why run? I’m sure that everyone has their own reasons for running but you have to put away your ego and look at the bigger picture. Do you have a chance? But then, after the fiasco with the Poway School Bond, maybe it’s wise to throw a hat into a race, not knowing what might happen during the course of the race.

  3. After the baloney story in the April edition of The Mission Times Courier, Mat Kostrinsky has been declared as irrelevant as his complaint filed with the City of SD concerning the alleged electioneering by the Republican Party in the Navajo community Planners, Inc. elections in March 2013.

  4. What’s This:

    1) “What’s this” have to do with the post above?

    2) Readers are probably not aware of the story in the Courier; it would help to tell us all exactly what you mean and provide links. Otherwise, this is just a vacuum.

    3) If you’d like a post about the story in the Courier, you could submit a guest column or a request for us to put something up by sending us the relevant info and links.

    Thanks,

    GL

  5. I don’t know how I popped up here, but…

Regarding What’s This, I didn’t file any complaint with the city regarding the Republican Party. I filed a complaint with the Navajo Community Planners, Inc chair about two individuals violating electioneering council policy for city planning boards.

I know sometimes facts don’t matter to some people.

PS – I won’t be responding to another post from What’s This, because clearly he (JP) doesn’t get his facts straight.

  6. Breaking news. Miriam Raftery, a liberal activist passing herself off as journalist, writes a hit piece on a Republican.

Now, how did a post on a supe race get hijacked?
