Steve Breen’s racist political cartoon is okay with MSM

Here’s a typical MSM racist political cartoon. It’s drawn by Steve Breen and gleaned from the 26 February U-T editorial page (and likely appearing in other papers). It’s racist because of what it DOESN’T show.

President Obama’s deportation policy was roughly the same as the latest iteration of the Trump policy. During his time in office, Obama deported about 2.5 MILLION people — more than any other President (verified by Snopes).

Yet nowhere in the MSM will you find such a cartoon denigrating our First Black President. Can you imagine a political cartoon in the NY TIMES, WaPo, or other MSM outlet, illustrating President Obama chasing a hapless Mexican family with a butterfly net?

Well, you’ll HAVE to imagine it, because no such cartoon exists. Not in the MSM.

Perhaps a better, more accurate cartoon would show an exhausted Obama passing the butterfly net “relay race style” to a waiting Trump — with the fleeing Mexican family the sought-after prize. Fat chance!

The sadly funny part is the political cartoonists, editors, etc. HONESTLY believe that they are not biased — and certainly not racists. But their actions speak louder than their protestations.

  1. Richard, Funny you would call out the MSM. Every right wing radio guy along with Fox had me convinced that Obama opened up the border(s) to destroy America. They never mentioned the facts that you have just stated. Of course this is a much more complex issue that would be solved quickly if the employers of illegals were themselves arrested. Then again there is easy political capital to be gained by denigrating brown outsiders.

  2. Paul, I can only conclude that you are easily gulled! 🙂

While right wing talk show hosts are indeed guilty of such transgressions, I doubt anyone would describe them as “mainstream media.” They are just pandering to their audience (which is a big reason I seldom listen to them). I find the all-purpose “if only we didn’t have illegals” mantra disgusting.

But “Fox” also fooled you into believing that “Obama opened up the border(s) to destroy America”? Seriously? On a newscast? Or was it just some commentator bloviating?

BTW, do you consider Fox to be MSM? Just curious.

Whatever you heard (or think you heard) on Fox, could you kindly post a link to such a claim on Fox? Ideally a news broadcast that asserted that “Obama opened up the border(s) to destroy America.” I’m always trying to expand my knowledge base. I’m sure others would find your source interesting.

You DO have a source, right?

  3. Richard, Of course I never believe any of the crap that comes from right wing media, I was just making a sarcastic point. I don’t have a specific link, I’ve just been listening to this crap for 8 straight years. Thank you for stating the actual facts.
The concept of the liberal MSM is interesting since 90% of talk radio is conservative. TV plays a game of back and forth based only on what is drawing ratings. Of the six or so owners of all major media can you name any of them that are “liberals”? They will do whatever they can to keep an election close because that maintains interest in their product. I remember when CNN was quite conservative. They only care about ratings. The “media” is no different than the big money lobbyists. The money shifts to the percieved winners. They do not have principles. That’s what you get when you have a society that values wealth over everything else.

  5. So?  HQ, where does Fox News state that “Obama opened up the border(s) to destroy America”?

Are we supposed to find it in the articles ourselves?  Or are you hoping that by posting a batch of URL’s, we’ll be somehow impressed with the gravitas of your comment?

    BTW, where IS your comment?

Posting a bunch of article links is downright childish.   Indeed, a child could do better.

Are you just trying to waste our time?

  6. “Obama opened up the border(s) to destroy America”?
Mr. Rider, I was making a general comment on what the right wing noise machine has been saying for decades. There have been numerous pundits on the right who have claimed that Obama’s goal was to destroy America. No one can argue that point. The reason I put a (s) on borders is because the Canadian border is rarely mentioned in their screeds due to the fact of skin color. Ask anyone in the radio hate bizz and they will tell you that shows about the scary brown people get ratings. Hedgecock made a career out of it and Hannity admitted it. Thanks again for stating the truth. Trump is just doing what Obama did. The reality is that the laws are made by congress however the president can direct the enforcement agencies to focus their efforts for maximum benefit like targeting criminals first.

  7. Richard,

Your point seems to be that “racism” in this case is defined by the absence of an identical cartoon featuring President Obama. I’m not sure where to put a handle on that argument, so I’ll simply disagree with your definition of racism.

More specifically, you said: “Well, you’ll HAVE to imagine it, because no such cartoon exists.”

15 seconds on Google Images (“Obama border cartoon”) brought this cartoon to the top of the page. It ran in the Denver Post in July 2014. Personally, I think the characterization is more specific, and more damning of Obama-era immigration policy than a butterfly net.

If you are willing to label the U-T as MSM, surely the Denver Post must also qualify, no?

  8. “Are we supposed to find it in the articles ourselves? ”

Richard, I made an assumption that you could read. Just another reminder that one should never assume.
