What the day after Thanksgiving is to Walmart, the first day of candidate filing is to the San Diego Registrar of Voters office: TOUGH. But ably led by Supervising Clerk Elvira Vargas, their Longest Day ended on Monday with few problems. Your correspondent watched spellbound as Waves of Central Committee candidates figuratively flung themselves at the office doors, like so many Salmon swimming up the American River to spawn. The patience of the Registrar’s staff, however, eventually saw all of them through to safety. Registrar of Voters Deborah Seiler can be proud of them.
As usual, when the toughest days of campaign season arrive, it is WOMEN who take the lead to restore order, and to preserve our Democracy! Each clerk your correspondent saw Monday was a woman, who calmly helped all of the candidates to complete needed paperwork, a big first step on the hopefuls’ long road to eventual leadership.
At SD Rostra we bow to the modern-day heroines who lovingly safeguard the Flame of Democracy handed down to us from Athens, Yorktown and Philadelphia. Here is a San Diego Valentine salute to those whose Noble Hearts saw the community through the ordeal of another Festive Filing Day. We are in their debt.
