Poll Shows Overwhelming Support for Managed Competition

I wanted to give you a heads up on an important poll released this week that shows where the public stands on possible reforms in city government.

The City’s Independent Budget Analyst released a city-wide survey of residents that showed the top reform San Diegans want to see implemented is “Managed Competition.”

In fact, a solid 74% of San Diegans want to see Managed Competition enacted. A host of other reforms come in way behind.

As you know, a wide coalition of taxpayer and civic groups has joined me in sponsoring the “Competition and Transparency in City Contracting Initiative” – a ballot measure that would jumpstart competitive bidding reforms at City Hall to save taxpayers millions.

We have roughly one month more to collect 100,000 signatures to qualify this ballot measure.  If you are part of the 74% of San Diegans who want to see competitive bidding in city government, please join us by 1) signing the petition and 2) getting your friends, colleagues, and neighbors to sign the petition as well.

You can download signature pages at www.ReformSanDiego.com

If you are interested in delving into the survey in more detail, here’s a full copy of it: http://www.sandiego.gov/iba/pdf/10_34.pdf

And here’s the story on the survey from NBC last night…

  1. Carl, this is outstanding news. The public labor unions will pull out the stops and spend whatever they must to try and defeat this measure. If there was ever a time for San Diego’s taxpayers to speak up and be heard, this is it.

I believe we’ll look back at this initiative as the true line drawn in the sand over managed competition. It’s a vote we as citizens cannot afford to lose, LITERALLY. Just imagine, we might actually lower the cost of services AND improve service delivery at the same time. The free market is a wonderful thing!
