International children’s advocate and former national Teacher of the Year Sandra McBrayer today endorsed Bonnie Dumanis for Mayor of San Diego. McBrayer founded the Monarch School in San Diego, the first successful school in the U.S. for homeless youth, and is currently the Chief Executive Officer of a San Diego-based child advocacy organization. President Bill Clinton named McBrayer the 1994 Teacher of the Year, and she was also the 1993 California and San Diego County Teacher of the Year. She currently Chairs the California State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

“I’ve known Bonnie Dumanis for many years– she is committed to protecting the rights of children and promoting a quality education for all our kids,” said McBrayer. “In her role as District Attorney, Bonnie has been committed to protecting children from sexual predators, keeping kids in school through truancy programs and supporting child victims,” said McBrayer. “As Mayor, I know she will continue to make schools and education a priority and she has the proven leadership and ability to bring real change.”

McBrayer’s leadership of a local child advocacy group includes working with community leaders, organization and government agencies to develop, enhance and strengthen policy, programs and projects which serve children and youth. McBrayer has also served as an adjunct professor in the College of Education at San Diego State University where she introduced new and first-year teachers to the multicultural, socio-political and economic dynamics of education.

McBrayer was appointed by the Governor to chair the State Advisory for Before and After School Programs, appointed by the Chief Justice of California to serve on the Judicial Council Access and Fairness Advisory Committee, and serves on numerous boards including San Diego Commission on Children, Youth and Families San Diego Workforce Investment Board and Project Safe Neighborhood.

  1. Everyone knows teachers are just union goons.
    ____

YOU apparently know that, Jefferson. (Or, it could be you are a troll.) The bulk of the rest of us know that teachers in general and individual teachers specifically may have different beliefs than the CTA or the local teachers’ union. –Admin

  2. I don’t particularly care for the tone of Jefferson’s message, but I must somewhat agree that when I see a teacher endorse a candidate, it doesn’t do much to impress me beyond believing the unions have that particular candidate in their pocket.

I would like to believe that teachers would do the right thing for students and education, but for too long I’ve seen teachers pushing their union’s agenda. Never have I seen any organized effort by teachers asking for meaningful reform and standing against their unions.

Show me a teachers organization or even a single prominent teacher, publicly asking to eliminate tenure, demand pension reform, advocating school choice, and I’ll be very shocked. As a parent, every teacher I’ve encountered has pounded away the nonsense of “underfunded” and “underpaid” into my son’s ear as they send home weekly fundraising requests.

I would love to be proven wrong.

  3. The difference, of course, is that Mr. Rider chooses to make his point in a credible and informed manner.

  4. This is the best the Dumanis campaign can do, a Teacher of the year from 17 years ago? And one hand-selected by liberal icon Bill Clinton? Earth-to-Dumanis-campaign: you don’t showcase a Liberal endorsement on a Conservative website. Embarassing.

  5. Alger,
Funny you should ask that. It all depends on who did the awarding.

The NTOY is awarded by a committee composed of several different educational organizations. So it appears to be fairly reputable. So I’d stick with my “mild positive” recommendation.

But results speak first, which is why I put more trust in a proven educator of the level of Marva Collins. You’ve heard of her, right.

  6. Bradley,

Yes, I have heard of Marva Collins and am somewhat familiar with the great work she did. Have you heard of the Monarch School?

  7. Actually endorsements are fairly helpful in learning more about the political viewpoints and leanings of a candidate. I welcome all posted endorsements in this case, along with publicizing the political contributions and IE spending.

I’m curious if some of the labor unions might NOT formally endorse in this mayoral race, as such an endorsement in this day and age might do more harm than good. Perhaps a quiet, last minute IE spending campaign with big bucks would be the preferred tactic for unions.

I would hesitate to suggest that possibility, but have no doubt that the unions have already considered it. Assuming Filner makes the runoff, I doubt they will hesitate to endorse him, as the subterfuge would be too transparent.

The interesting question is what support and/or endorsements the unions are going to give Dumanis and Fletcher in the primary, as they are desperate to keep DeMaio from making the runoff.

    And for good reason.
