Michael Steele has committed his last gaffe as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. Yesterday he lost a bid for a second 2-year term, defeated by Wisconsin GOP head Reince Priebus. Priebus won on the 7th ballot with 97 votes from the 168 RNC members. Steele dropped out after the 4th ballot, endorsing another candidate who also lost.

Priebus [pronounced Ryns PREE-bus]  had served as general counsel for the RNC, but broke with Steele after the long series of well-publicized errors.  Steele’s meltdown with grassroot GOP leaders fell  so far he  had just 45 votes when he finally accepted his defeat.

Priebus, age 38, is a  native of Kenosha, Wisconsin, married with 2 children.  His legal credentials include clerking for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and US District Court for southern Florida. The base he built in Wisconsin helped the party defeat Sen. Russ Feingold (D) in 2010, and also regain the Governorship with Scott Walker.

Priebus told RNC members,  “Our country cannot afford a second term of President Obama and Democrat control of the U.S. Senate and possibly the House. Fortunately, our victories in 2010 put us in a position to put a stop to the Obama administration’s liberal agenda.”

Priebus won support for demanding greater transparency, competitive bidding on all future major contracts, and retiring the party’s  debt.  “We have to get on track. And together we can defeat Barack Obama in 2012,” Priebus said in a brief victory speech,  pleading for unity . “We all recognize that there’s a steep hill here ahead of us, and the only way that we’ll be able to move forward is if we’re all together.”

Among his key duties will be planning for the 2012 national GOP nominating convention.  Congratulations to Mr. Priebus…a dose of Midwestern common sense is just what the RNC desperately needs to win again in 2012.

  1. When Ron took over as County Chairman many years ago, the Republican Party of SD had good intentions, but not a lot else. Ron Nehring and his team quickly made the SD-GOP into a major factor in local races. That impact grew last November, when sweeping the 16 top priority SD races as Tony Krvaric and Barrett Tetlow ably kept the momentum going.

That Ron Nehring would go on to be State GOP Chairman and nearly national treasurer would have seemed impossible a decade ago. That is how far he has traveled.
