From today’s U-T San Diego:

At least one San Diego Metropolitan Transit System board member hopes to undo the $20,000 boost in benefits approved last month for CEO Paul Jablonski.

Lemon Grove Councilwoman Mary England on Tuesday plans to urge her fellow council members to oppose the increase, and she will represent their position at the MTS board at 9 a.m. Thursday.

The sweetened benefits for Jablonski were approved 11-0 — pushing Jablonski’s total annual compensation past $429,000 — a vote that England supported.

A story by The Watchdog later in the month highlighted the increase, and issues with whether the meeting met state open-meetings requirements. A revote will be held this week.

England, who is running for Assembly, said information from MTS staff and input from her constituents changed her mind.

“I think it was a combination of talking to people and also riders. It’s not our money, it’s the riders’ money,” England said. “The story certainly opened my eyes and I thought, you know what, the process definitely has to change.”
