Assemblyman Martin Garrick Supports Controller’s Decision to Withhold Pay
Sacramento, CA – Assemblyman Martin Garrick (R-Carlsbad), announced today that he supported Controller John Chiang’s decision to withhold legislator pay and per diem following the passage of a state budget last week.
Controller Chiang’s decision is based on Proposition 25, passed by voters in November 2010, which requires legislators to pass a budget bill by the June 15th deadline in order to continue receiving their pay. Last week, for the first time in over two decades, the Legislature met the deadline and sent a budget to Governor Brown.
“I am pleased that the Controller decided to stick to his original decision to withhold pay and per diem. The gimmicks and illegal tax increases included in last week’s sham budget made it clear that it was an attempt to circumvent Proposition 25 and keep paychecks flowing,” said Garrick.
Earlier this month, Assemblyman Garrick sent a formal request for his salary and per diem to be withheld in the event a budget was not delivered and signed by the Governor by the deadline.
“When the majority party realized they were not going to have support for tax increases, it became clear they were going to resort to creating a sham budget that would be forced through on a majority vote. I don’t believe this was the intent of the voters when they passed Proposition 25 and will not support a budget that does not address our massive deficit,” added Garrick.
