From the Mark Powell for School Board campaign…
United States – 180 School Days

San Diego Unified School District – 175 School Days

161 School Days if both state tax initiatives do not pass, making SDUSD one of the shortest school years in the world!
Powell writes…
My opponent John Lee Evans voted to cut the school year to 161 Days…The shortest school year in the WORLD! I will fix this!
Yes it is true! The San Diego Unified Board has already pressured teachers to take five unpaid furlough days for the next two years, which equals one week less of school, and an additional 14 furlough days if two tax measures fail to pass in November. The school year would end on May 21. Our students cannot afford to miss a month of school!
I have a plan to turn around the San Diego Unified School District by:
• Restoring Parent Confidence: I will not pander to special interests. I will advocate for parents, teachers and administrators, but will base all my decisions on what is best for students.
• Promoting Teacher Effectiveness: I will work with the teacher’s union implement systems that are fair and equitable….let’s keep our best teachers!
• Getting the School Board Back on Track: I will repair the budget by responsibly negotiating all contracts. The public deserves an accounting of expenditures and results achieved from each school program.
