Lisa Shaffer: Cowards, Straw Men Fallacies, and Democratic Party Politics As Usual

WC Varones at Encinitas Undercover posted a snippet from Councilmember Lisa Shaffer’s newsletter:

“I also believe that refusing to participate in a debate organized by the League of Women Voters, even after being given a variety of dates to choose from, is cowardly and disrespectful of voters.”

In the comments thread on the Encinitas Undercover post, one of the participants reported on an email exchange about Shaffer’s accusation:

“I asked Lisa Shaffer in an email who she was talking about as far as the debates. Here is her response:
It will become public when it becomes public. Sorry, I am not the one to answer your question.’  Her words, not mine.”

You can’t make this kind of response up. Shaffer throws the classic straw man up, then burns up when the straw man comes burning down.

By the way, the League of Women Voters is NOT an unbiased, non-partisan organization. Any Republican or Libertarian candidate who debates in front of them can expect hostility, loaded questions, and a hostile environment. If the “soon to be public when it becomes public” candidate is not a registered Democrat, that candidate is not “cowardly” but rather “smart.”

Now… is making an accusation against someone, but refusing to name that someone, smart…or cowardly?

  1. This is scary. I actually agree with Brian. She gets her marching orders from the local Democrat party . The California Democratic party is very corrupt right now much like the Republicans would be if they were a majority. Remember: The Money cares not for your principles.

  3. Brian’s magic eight ball is malfunctioning. This had nothing to do with the League of Women Voters.

According to a recent comment on this EU thread, Kristen Gaspar has refused to debate Dave Roberts at the Encinitas-Leucadia Town Council debate.

Cue Brian to slander this organization.

New Rule: Republicans will only participate in debates hosted and moderated by the NRA.

    Reading is Fundamental, Encinitas Dad.

I highlighted a direct quote from Lisa Shaffer’s newsletter. It is in the second paragraph (and italicized).

  5. You got me. With all the potential debates Gaspar has not committed to, it gets confusing.

Perhaps you can simplify the situation for us by listing all of the Supervisor debates Gaspar has committed to.

    (wink)

I think those two have participated in 3-4 debates already. I KNOW they debated at the Petco HQ because I watched that debate.

I’ll save you some time, Encinitas Dad:

ROBERTS: I believe in serving the Democratic Party platform but I believe I’m a Republican at heart when I’m talking to Republicans. And while I’m a Republican at heart, the only reason I am in trouble is because my Republican colleagues played politics with my ethics scandal last year. But I’m really non-partisan.

    GASPAR: I’m not Dave Roberts.

Gaspar wins by 8-10 points in November.

  7. Unfortunately, I agree with your predicted result, if not your reasoning. It will be a little tighter though due to the presidential race.

  8. We, the public, need to understand that no one would accuse the San Diego / California League of Women Voters of being neutral or impartial. The group is a joint education/advocacy group 501c3/501c4 that uses its tax-exempt “educational” activities to advocate for its political positions. For example: the LWV advocates repeal of the death penalty, higher taxes, and more government borrowing (Props 62, 55 & 51). Don’t ever accuse them of being impartial.
