WHAT:
San Diego “Competition Express” Bus Tour (See Attached Itinerary)
After five months of collecting signatures, a grassroots campaign led by City Councilmember Carl DeMaio will turn in petitions with over 138,000 signatures of city voters to qualify the “Competition and Transparency in City Contracting” Initiative for the November 2010 city election. The Initiative amends the City Charter to hold city government accountable for fair and open competitive bidding on city services and contracts.
WHO:
City Councilmember Carl DeMaio (Initiative Sponsor)
Accompanied by campaign volunteers and supporters
Joined by special guest speakers at each stop on the tour
WHY:
Our city government faces a massive budget deficit and we have seen our neighborhood services cut to unacceptable levels. We could be saving millions each year through fair and open competitive bidding – something voters overwhelmingly approved with Prop C in 2006.
Unfortunately, the city’s labor unions have blocked this reform because they want to keep the sweetheart deals they have arranged with city politicians. Now city labor unions are demanding more costly mandates be applied to public and private projects – driving jobs out of our region.
To make real change happen in city government, we must turn to the voters through this ballot measure to impose reform from the outside.”
–Councilmember Carl DeMaio.
