Is there a “ROCKY” sequel in San Diego’s Political Future? — paging Rocky Chavez, Acting Secretary of California Veterans Affairs.

Friends and supporters are encouraging Rocky Chavez to seek one of SD County’s ‘open’ state legislative seats in 2012.  The career US Marine served two terms on the O’side city council, leaving in 2009 when Gov. Arnold first named him Undersecretary for Veterans Affairs, and then Acting Secretary the past six months, as Jerry Brown looked for a permanent successor.

My sources say the retired Marine Colonel, who commuted from SD county for the veterans post, is hearing from business leaders and friends, eager to see him on the ‘firing line’ again, this time as a state legislator.  Where and what that might be will depend on lines soon to be drawn by the State Redistricting Commission.

Rocky Chavez was the glue holding together a conservative majority on the Oceanside city council for several years. His similar ability to get veterans groups to cooperate made him a natural choice for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

Like that other Rocky in the movies, Rocky Chavez has plenty of heart and resiliency. He would be a major asset again in San Diego County politics. I can hear the crowds chanting now, ” Rocky, Rocky, Rocky“.

  1. Rumor has it that there are a bunch of local electeds that candidate sherry hodges has as endorsements are recruiting him.

  2. There are a lot of folks in Oceanside who were saddened when Rocky left to go to Sac. Though he did a fabulous job as Undersecretary and Acting Sec. of Vet Affairs, we are glad to have him back and will support him all the way!!!

  3. Thanks to Barry Jantz for the shout out on the Flash Report, Rostra’s statewide media partner. Thanks to Bradley Fikes for the acknowledgement.
