Rand Paul’s planned attack of Trump, at tonight’s Republican Presidential Primary debate, is either a puerile stunt for publicity or a calculated cover for Ted Cruz to appear like a uniter. Either way, I think it makes Rand look like an “also-ran” candidate now. I hope I’m wrong but I suspect I’m correct. Want proof? Rand Paul is not raising money.
While Trump is leading the polls, 2/3 of the Republicans are undecided. About half of this judicious group will mostly break for Bush ( and not support Trump). Trump can however, be in a position to “anoint” the conservative alternative to Bush; this is why Ted Cruz is cagily staying off the Attack Trump Train.
Ben Carson is an awesome man but he won’t get support from the presently undecided Republican primary voters — I think his followers naturally break for Cruz. Marco Rubio is an articulate spokesman but he’s stuck in the crowded field — I think his supporters naturally break for Bush.
If Trump eventually backs Cruz, it’s Bush vs. Cruz to face off against either (a) a scandal ridden 90s Democrat or a 74-year old socialist from a small, rural state.
Unless the Democratic party nominates Jim Webb (for whom I could vote), a Republican will be President. Cruz knows this and is playing the Reagan strategy: appeal to the three-legged conservative stool while acting like a statesman. Bush can’t compete against that unified coalition.
Unless I’m wrong about Rand Paul’s strategy, I think Ted Cruz will be the next President.

I’m getting the vibe that Rand would prefer to be Goldwater – a principled Senator that doesn’t have to compromise to get things passed like a President often does.

The Bush family gave us Souter and Roberts. I’m sure the more judicious Republicans remember that. Maybe Ted Cruz should be on the supreme court.
