Ernies Slates

With over 1.4 MILLION voters eligible to vote in the June
primary, candidates for the various countywide offices face
quite a challenge.

How do you make yourself known? The best bargain is to
pay $6,500 to have your statement of qualifications printed in the sample ballot. Most serious candidates do that.

But County Assessor/Recorder candidate Ernie Dronenburg
is locking up another bargain with a series of slate cards.
Disclosure reports filed with the County of San Diego show
Dronenburg spending almost $30,000 to appear on Jim Lacy’s
well – regarded Landslide Communications slates. Examples
of the Lacy slates are shown in the attached graphic chart.

Well-informed sources believe Dronenburg also has deposits
down for another half-dozen slates similarly targeted to likely
voters. This does not guarantee Dronenburg success in June,
but professionals regard slates as an intelligent option for
countywide contests.

efforts is available here:

  1. It is interesting the choice of slates that Mr. D is “purchasing” (emphasis added). Howard Jarvis and “Save Prop 13″, the National Tax Limitation Committee, and the San Diego County Republican Leadership. An uninformed electorate might believe that his name on these slates indicates an endorsement. Nothing could be further from the truth … for two reasons.

First, it is Jeff Olson, the Chief of Assessment Services at the Assessor’s office, who has the endorsement of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. Olson has the endorsement of the National Tax Limitation Committee. Olson also holds endorsement by the San Diego County Republican Party. This is simply another attempt by Mr. Dronenburg to mislead San Diego County voters. Wasn’t it just two weeks ago that his ballot designation was thrown out when he attempted to call himself an Assessor?

Secondly, Mr. D is underestimating the intelligence of San Diego County voters. In today’s political environment voters are more aware that these slates, for the most part, are akin to a classified ad. Where is the truth in advertising?!

  2. Sounds like Mr. Dronenburg is spending a lot of money to make up for his lack of endorsements.

Since he has no previous experience in the County Assessors office, or as an assessor for that matter, I am concerned that he may do the same frivolous spending with the taxpayers money.

  3. Come on, Ruth Ann. In fairness to Ernie, the readers here know that the way one spends personal and/or private campaign dollars to win an election has nothing to do with a candidate’s view of how public monies are spent. Give us a little credit for not being politically dense.
