DeMaio files for mayoral run
By ELIZABETH MALLOY, The Daily Transcript

San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio has filed the paperwork to run for mayor in the 2012 election, but downplayed the move in a written statement.

“Fixing the city’s pension and budget problems are my top priorities, and if running for mayor will advance fiscal reform of our city, I will do it,” he wrote. “As I weigh this decision whether to run, I will be spending the next several weeks talking to supporters and listening to residents across our city to seek their advice and ideas.

“Since I’m actively considering and discussing a possible race for mayor, I have filed a ‘Candidate Intention’ form with the City Clerk’s office as required by law,” he added.

DeMaio is the first person to file the paperwork for the next mayoral race, according to the San Diego City Clerk’s Office.

  1. Carl DeMaio certainly has the background and where with all to make things happen — I have witnessed his tenacity to get things done in the last political rounds guiding the city out of its monumental problems. He doesn’t acquiesce and firmly stands up for his convictions like being a torch bearer on No on Prop D. He definitely shows no fear.

  2. No on Prop D had a lot of big name supporters. What has DeMaio actually gotten done on his own since being elected? What can he call “his” work? Not accusing, just asking…

  3. Actually the list of accomplishments Carl can point to is quite long.

Prop B (Pension) and C (Managed Competition) in 2006 were DeMaio’s ideas from his 2004 “Citizens Budget” and he helped lead the effort for passage.

Redevelopment agency reform: DeMaio got Petco Park debt transferred from General Fund to CCDC saving taxpayers $11 million a year.

Labor reform: The 6% cuts in 2009 to labor contracts? Proposed by the Mayor? Nope, proposed by DeMaio 4 weeks into office.

There’s a lengthy list his people have put together, complete with the total amount of savings generated for taxpayers.

The guy is driving the debate and getting stuff done.

  4. Try to imagine our city WITHOUT City Councilman Carl DeMaio. Picture instead Republican Brian Maienschein still in office — or imagine his replacement had instead been cut from the same Establishment cloth as Brian.

Maienschein had no ideas (except to propose building a SECOND Scripps Ranch fire station when the one we have was answering two calls per 24 hours), voted for the city’s disastrous underfunded, retroactive 2002 pension increases, mindlessly approved one or more false city prospectuses, never suggested meaningful cost controlling ideas and never grasped the magnitude of the city fiscal problems — in short, just another deer caught in headlights — part of the herd that has been grazing on the 12th floor.

I present this not to so much point out Maienschein’s weaknesses, but to suggest that he represents the “Republicans” who have inhabited city hall ever since Bruce Henderson lost is reelection bid. Harry Mathis, Jim Madaffer, Judy McCarty, Byron Wear, Susan Golding, Dick Murphy — these conventional GOP city politicians were useless as the fiscal disaster developed in San Diego — indeed, worse than useless — they sometimes lead the charge off the cliff.

Yes, with our labor union owned-and-operated city council majority, Carl is not able to get as much done as we all (well, MOSTLY all) would like, but it’s not from a lack of trying. Carl is THE force driving reform in San Diego — it’s hard to imagine where we’d be without him.

  5. When does Mr. Rider get around to mentioning that he was the longtime Chairman of the Libertarian Party of San Diego, and that party’s nominee for Governor back in the 1990s? That he regards Republicans as his real competition, and thus reserves 80% of his criticisms here for Republicans like Bill Horn, Ron Roberts and Judy McCarty? When does he mention that two of his targets- Pam Slater and Judy McCarty-defeated him for County Supervisor in the 90s? This pose he strikes – the conscience of conservative Republicans – is wearing very, very thin. I don’t see the Republican bloggers here attacking Libertarians. Draw some conclusions from that Mr. R.

  6. Uhhh, Pose — you think it’s a surprise to regular ROSTRA readers that I’m a long time Libertarian? Did ANYONE on this board not know this prior to this “outing”??

Seems to me I praise Republicans as well — Tom McClintock, Bruce Henderson, Fred Schnaubelt, Larry Stirling, Tony Strickland, Lori Zapf and, of course, Carl DeMaio. Indeed, I even endorsed Judy McCarty in her runoff race against Pam Slater (lesser evil) for that County Supervisor race you cite.

As for a lack of attacks here on Libertarians, answer me this: How many tax increases has the LP or its candidates supported in the last 30 years? How’s that number stack up to the herd of RINO’s that have been grazing in this county local offices during that time frame? Not all Republican office holders are RINO’s, but there are far more than any true Republican would like to admit.

Pose, I’m presuming I’m here addressing a RINO — but since you hide behind a pseudonym, I guess that’s just conjecture on my part.

BTW, I haven’t been the SD LP chair for maybe 15 years. Last time I ran as a Libertarian Party candidate was 1992. Perhaps you would also like to review my high school transcript grades?

YOU may feel compelled to follow the GOP Eleventh Commandment — and not speak ill of fellow Republicans no matter how bad they are — but I’m never buying into that restriction. And following that ill-advised directive has caused the rise of an often GOP-hostile Tea Party movement.

It’s time for Republicans to act like Republicans are SUPPOSED to act.

  7. Rider, you are a Libertarian?!! We are shocked…SHOCKED to find that we’ve had you writing in our midst for so long and didn’t know it!!
