From the Anderson for State Senate campaign…

California Republican Assembly Unanimously Endorses Joel Anderson for State Senate

President Reagan Called CRA the “Conscience of the Republican Party”

TEMECULA – Just two days after Assemblyman Joel Anderson officially announced his candidacy, the California Republican Assembly – California’s oldest and largest grassroots conservative organization – quickly threw its endorsement behind Anderson’s bid for State Senate.

It didn’t take long for the CRA to determine who the real conservative was in the race to replace Senator Dennis Hollingsworth in the San Diego-based 36th State Senate District. Each candidate’s conservative credentials were highly scrutinized by the delegates and hundreds of attendees. After a thorough review, consisting of tough questions about immigration and taxes fielded by each candidate, the delegates made their conservative choice.

The delegates voted unanimously to endorse Assemblyman Anderson on the very first ballot.

“There is no question that Assemblyman Anderson is the real conservative in this race,” said Greater Santee CRA President Frank Hilliker. “He has the most conservative voting record in the Assembly – and has still managed to move major bills through the legislature. That’s the type of effective leadership our party needs in Sacramento.”

“We need Assemblyman Anderson in the State Senate,” said CRA Immediate Past President Ken Mettler. “Joel Anderson is a rock-solid conservative that has been fighting in the trenches alongside the CRA for decades. He is the only candidate we trust in this race to take the necessary actions required to return fiscal sanity to the state.”

Incorporated in 1935, CRA is the state’s oldest and largest Republican volunteer organization.  President Ronald Reagan referred to CRA as “the conscience of the Republican Party.”

  1. Congrats! Looking forward to the same leadership in the senate as Joel has in the Assembly.

  2. Last I saw, Anderson owned up to his campaign financial problems, paid back any questionable donations in full and worked with the FPPC to pay a fine to finalize the matter. Politicians try to deal with the myriad of campaign reporting rules, and mistakes are made a lot of the time. Anderson took responsibility for his errors. CRA knows this and is supporting the person that has the real track record of getting things done in Sacramento, not someone who is now a conservative after being a liberal last time they ran for Assembly.

  3. Nice try. To blame what he did on reporting rules/mistakes is laughable. How about what he tried to pull on the water board he served on. Each and every one of those board members said he is not morally fit for public office.

What did he do in Sacramento? – vote to make RINO Maldonado Lt. gov. or were you referring to when he and the other Republican jewels in the Assembly put up the 6 votes to raised your vehicle license fees, raised your income taxes and increased the state sales tax? Or perhaps you refer to his vote with democrats Christine Kehoe and Lori Saldana for a bill written by radical environmentalists, ripping up established contract law to make the Children’s Pool in La Jolla a marine mammal park. A real Conservative is he.

  4. Joel has had an issue. He dealt with it honorably. Joel’s opponent has also had issues. He’s dealt with those.
If we as conservatives continue to make perfect our threshold, then the legislature would only contain liberals who have no such litmus test, and it’s darn near that now!
Besides, we remember what happenned to that other fella that was without sin, right?
Assemblyman Anderson is a very hard working conservative rational representative in Sacramento. I’m sure his worthy opponent is a decent public servant, but we’ve never seen him operate in a partison world from a minority position. Joel has, and has accomplished things for us. Check with CalTrans if you don’t believe me!
    We need more like him.

  5. Issue or Issues? And doesn’t he have more than one opponent? This isn’t about perfection. It is about blind loyalty in the face of obvious corruption! We ignore and excuse this in leaders of our County and State Party and in some of our electeds at our own peril. And then one day, the koolaid machine blows up in our face and we get Duke Cunningham that sets all our efforts in the Party back for years. Keep drinking.

  6. At the risk of being accused of provincialism let me say that the election of Joel Anderson to the California State Senate is vital to my East San Diego County constituents. The San Diego County portion of the senate district is by far the largest part of the district. It makes sense for us to be represented by our local legislator. Joel Anderson is the rare politician who keeps his promises of low taxes and strict conservative principles.
Jim Stieringer, Board Member, Grossmont Healthcare District

  7. Mr. Stieringer, I can appreciate your loyalty, but what taxes has Mr. Anderson lowered? While on the Padre Dam Board Mr. Anderson tried to raise the price of water and tried to give the campground in Santee over to private business so that it no longer would benefit the district.

These are direct questions to you because you’ve made some claims that you are not backing up:

    1) What specific stance has Mr. Stone taken in his career that makes him less conservative than you like?
    2) What specific bills have been passed into law from any Republican state senator that are “vital” to Grossmont Healthcare District or East County that only Mr. Anderson has the ability to pass?
    3) What taxes has Mr. Anderson lowered?

I do not think Mr. Anderson is an evil man, but after rules are broken like the ones Mr. Anderson broke…it is time to find a new candidate. Jeff Stone has actually lowered taxes in Riverside County by $48 million. He actively supports gun rights. He actively worked against Prop 1A. I could go on and on. As important as it is to pay attention to a public servant while he is voting on bills, we need to start holding them accountable for what they do when they are not voting. Mr. Anderson lost our trust. Jeff Stone has earned it.

I look forward to your specific answers.

  8. PS Constituents laundering money through other counties is not some bear-trap Mr. Anderson fell into. The rules are crystal clear. He saw an opportunity to get around the rules and got caught. It was deliberate, thought out, planned, and willful. He is not some innocent victim here.

  9. Re: “or were you referring to when he and the other Republican jewels in the Assembly put up the 6 votes to raised your vehicle license fees, raised your income taxes and increased the state sales tax?”

Combat Sheep, do you have any real source you can site that Anderson had anything to do with the 6 votes above? From what I recall Anderson voted NO… what more are you asking him to do that you can demonstrate he didn’t do?

    DDD

  10. DDD – Your good friend Abel Maldonado spilled the beans on the John and Ken show as to what the Republican Assembly Members did behind closed doors in putting up the 6 votes needed to raise the taxes! I did not hear ‘Tax fighter’ Joel give any voice to his dissent as Chuck DeVore did as whip.

  11. Combat Sheep —

So basically we are forming our entire assessment of all Republicans in the State Assembly, specifically Joel Anderson, based on something Chuck DeVore did/said while running for US Senate? Essentially, we should disregard the other members, their staff, former members, party leaders, and all other involved parties who all say there is no “tax raising conspiracy” and instead listen to Chuck “9%” DeVore who, while being an excellent conservative who I agree with on almost every point, will do anything for attention. Sounds like a great plan, will the kool-aid be ready by the time the comet gets here?

  12. Some real twisted logic here Mathew. Joel Anderson purports to be a “Tax Fighter”. So why did he not come out strongly against those who were voting with the dems to raise our taxes at the time?

What I think of Joel has nothing to do with Chuck DeVore or anything Chuck has said while running for US Senate. Chuck stood on his principles at the time and resigned as minority whip in protest. I have seen Chuck stand on principle over the years when it wasn’t popular.

The bone you have to pick is with Abel Maldonado who related what happened behind closed doors in detail on the John and Ken show.

I and many other Republicans are sick and tired of those Republicans (not all but many) in Sacramento who ‘go along to get along’. How about some principled bold leadership for a change! You don’t win by acting like the other side.

  13. I get it, the Combat Sheep is not balanced. In fact, it’s so
off-balance it may be on the payroll.

If the topic is Joel Anderson the sheep bleats a negative tone.
If it’s the other guy the sheep sees no concerns and NO conflicts of interests with County stuff and relatives, but instead offers his woolly goodness for warmth.

What a Cozy sheep we have covering the sharp edges of a Stone….
    BAAAAAAAAAAAA…..

  14. Mr. Schwartz is obviously a Jeff Stone sycophant. I mourn his willingness to abandon the 50 year old 11th commandment, “thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican”. (Gaylord Parkinson, California Party Chairman 1958).

However, since Mr. Schwartz raises the point about opposition to Proposition 1A, I invite him to check the Secretary of State website that shows that Stone’s catch phrase “No way 1A” never found its way into an opposition committee. Mr. Stone raised and spent nothing to defeat the dreadful Prop 1A. He simply broadcast a few e-mails to make it appear that he was in front of the parade when, in fact, he may have simply followed the parade, shovel in hand.

As our friends in Texas would say, “all hat, no cattle”.

    Jim Stieringer

  15. Wow, Mr. Stieringer. Pretty hostile. I felt my response was pretty professional and straight forward. Of course, you chose to not answer any of my questions which speaks volumes. I am attempting to have a real discussion…you are name calling and making unsubstantiated claims that you can’t back up.

I am no sycophant, but as a constituent of Mr. Anderson I was disappointed in his mistake. I was disappointed in Mr. Anderson’s lack of leadership on gun issues in California. I was disappointed when I spoke to him at a TEA Party in El Cajon and he suggested that the only way to beat the Democrats is to use dirty tactics like running fake candidates against Democrats labeled as “Green Party” or “Liberal Party” candidates to split the vote rather than just win the debate. (Similar to what unethical Democrats are doing in Nevada to support Sen. Reid) I was disappointed when I approached a staff member of his at an Albondigas lunch to tell him about AB357 and was told “he’ll only support bills that have Democrat support already otherwise…it has no chance.” I was disappointed when he voted to confirm a very liberal Lieutenant Governor.

This was all before I saw Jeff Stone had actually lowered taxes in Riverside County by $48 million and not just talked about it, issued a proclamation supporting issuing CCWs to law-abiding citizens, was the lone dissenting vote on stimulus spending that teaches Mexicans in the U.S. how to speak Spanish, and finally his opposition of 1A at multiple Tea Parties (the same Tea Party where Mr. Anderson told me the only way to win is play dirty).

So I support Mr. Stone. I volunteered to run a booth last weekend at a function in East County where I found out I wasn’t the only one who is disappointed in Mr. Anderson. Does Mr. Stoen walk on water? I don’t know yet, but I know he hasn’t laundered money. I know Mr. stone has been affective and has a history of supporting conservative causes. He’s earned my vote.

And “On Balance”…are you seriously comparing Mr. Anderson’s illegal, thought-out money laundering scam to Mr. Stone’s sister who volunteers for the County of Riverside helping victims of domestic abuse and the homeless? I dunno. I might try a different angle of attack.

Look, you guys can turn this into a slug match if you like, but you are dreadfully outnumbered, dangerously outclasses, and woefully on the wrong side of the facts. My point is this: we have to stop voting for public servants who break laws and rules even if they’ve done a special favor for us and/or are in our party. We especially have to stop them from getting into higher office. Mr. Anderson is not evil, but we have a better candidate so let’s support Jeff Stone. He’s earned it.

  16. “On Balance” sounds un-balanced and un-hinged. I don’t believe I have even mentioned Anderson’s opponents (plural) by name and I am not on anyone’s payroll except my own. I have no dog in this hunt except that I don’t support baaaaad crooks in my party.

  17. Kudos to Combat Sheep and Mr. Schwartz for fighting with reason. I probably would have just simply voted for Anderson if I wasn’t paying attention.

Good points and arguments > Ignoring arguments and name calling.

Simply being endorsed by “insert major conservative organization here” shouldn’t make that candidate immune to all scrutiny.

Isn’t this blind support mentality usually how we end up with those candidates who disgrace the Republican/Conservative name? I think I die a little on the inside every time I hear about a “Republican Politician caught cheating on wife” or “Republican Politician caught taking illegal campaign contributions” or something. =/

  18. While I don’t agree with Joel on several issues, clearly he is rock-solid consistent on fiscal matters. I don’t think he has EVER voted to pass any of the profligate budgets dumped on us these past few years.

Frankly I’m less concerned about the supposed moral turpitude of my representatives than with how they will VOTE. When faced with a “moderate” Republican, I’ll support a true fiscal conservative coke-snortin’, womanizing, gay bigamist any day.

Not that Joel is gay, mind you.

  19. Richard – You obviously have not taken the time to read the comments above your own. We have not been talking about the moral turpitude of Joel Anderson – we have been talking about good ole corruption. He is rock solid on fiscal corruption.

  20. Joel’s alleged “corruption” cost taxpayers not one cent. He stole from no one.

His alleged actions had to do with getting around rules to limit people’s right to contribute directly to candidates — a victimless crime. Hence your concern is about moral turpitude.

As I clearly stated — I don’t care much about Joel’s morals or even his legal behavior (as long as others are not harmed), but I DO care very much about how he and his opponents will VOTE once in office.

You don’t care much about how politicians vote — or at least, it’s of secondary importance to you. Or perhaps you just favor electing more weak-willed Republicans. Or perhaps you are a paid toady on the campaign staff of Joel’s opponent.

Indeed, perhaps you are not a Republican at all. Everyone knows I’m not!

Which brings up a point: Unlike you, I make clear just who I am. It’s easy for you to do combat, Mr. Sheep — hiding behind a pseudonym. But without revealing who you really are, one can only wonder what your real agenda is.
    .

  21. Mr. Rider,
In Jeff Stone you have a candidate who has actually lowered taxes during his time in office. Something none of his opponents can claim.

A public servants’ vote is not more important than his actions. It is equally important. To me anyway. I am willing to bet I am not in the minority with that opinion.

Victimless crimes are still crimes. However, had he gotten away with it, the victim would have been his opponents who did play by the rules and the voters who look at how much money a candidate has raised to judge viability.

His moral turpitude indicates whether he will keep his word and vote the way he says he will vote if elected. It also reflects on those affiliated with him and his party. If an anti-tax guy breaks laws, it makes pro-tax opponents look that much better.

Like I said earlier, Mr. Anderson is not evil, but it is time to find a better candidate; one that will vote against spending and taxes and may repeat his performance of lowering taxes for us all and not knowingly breaking laws while doing it.

    -Michael

  22. Jeff Stone is going to LOWER our state taxes?? Oh PLEASE! Sounds like you are ingesting an illegal substance yourself!

State taxes will not be reduced until the DEMS decide to reduce our taxes. All a Republican can do is “just say no,” and not cave to some deal.

I’ve known Joel for many years and know how he votes — and WILL vote. And I’ve seen too many “fiscally conservative” Republicans sell out when it benefited themselves — or the room was full of people wanting something from government.

Michael, I don’t care if your concerns represent the majority or not — I’m not one noted for going with the flow. Not hardly!

Besides, this IS a gerrymandered GOP district . Nancy Pelosi could switch parties, run for this office and, if she won the GOP primary (however unlikely that would be), she’d win the general.

BTW, thanks for having the courage to write under your real name!

  23. Discussion is a key to good politics. I have no fears or reservations on letting everyone know who is typing all these amazing pearls of intellect and wisdom.

I didn’t say Jeff Stone will lower taxes, but the fact that he has lowered taxes makes him a stronger candidate than Mr. Anderson. Let’s try having an honest debate, Mr. Rider, and stay away from outlandishness. I simply pointed out that Mr. Stone not only talks about fighting against news taxes and has a history of voting against new taxes, but he (unlike almost every public servant in California right now) has actually lowered taxes!

I don’t understand your point about the Gerrymandered district. Jeff Stone and Mr. Anderson are both Republicans running against each other in a primary. Care to clarify?

Mr. Rider, everyone keeps falling back on some version of “I’ve know Joel for years”. How many years is minimum to know someone before you are forced to vote for them no matter what crimes they commit?

Jeff Stone is a solid conservative. Anti-illegal immigration, anti-crime, anti-tax, supports Prop 8, pro-life, pro-guns, pro-business, pro-jobs. I can give you specific programs or legislation Jeff Stone has supported proving each stance. You implied Jeff Stone is a moderate, but you don’t give any example. My guess is there is no example.

So we have an honest and conservative candidate in Jeff Stone to vote for. Let’s thank Mr. Anderson for his public service and wish him luck in whatever private sector job he takes after the elections.

  24. And lets hope that Joel will choose to properly pay his taxes this time around with his private sector job.

  25. “All a Republican can do is “just say no,” and not cave to some deal.”
    says Mr. High Rider!

But they DID cave Mr. High Rider:

Abel Maldonado spilled the beans on the John and Ken show as to what the Republican Assembly Members (including Joel Anderson) did behind closed doors in putting up the 6 votes (that included Abel Maldonado) needed to raise your vehicle license fees, your income taxes and increased the state sales tax!- costing all of us a lot more than the “red cent” you mention! I did not hear ‘Tax fighter’ Joel give any voice to his dissent. Then Joel votes to make Maldonado Lt. gov.!

Character DOES count Mr. High Rider – it determines what one does when in office and when no one is looking. You have a definite disconnect in this regard or maybe it is you who is on the payroll since you are so willing to overlook so much -and so busy bloviating in defense of Joel Anderson that you still have not read the comments above your own. You worry more about who I am than who your elected official really is!

Thank you for the information on Jeff Stone, Mr. Schwartz. He sounds like a solid Conservative choice in this race. There was a time I would have considered voting for Mr. Rider for any office but to say he dissappoints is an understatement.

Strong opinions and even outright dislike of those written about here is fine. No holds barred, when it comes to opinion. As you can see above, we have not limited anyone. But, we would caution against stretching the truth or making things up about things you may know little about.

For instance, Abel Maldonado is a Senator. Therefore, any closed door caucus meetings in which he would have been involved during the budget saga would have been in the Republican Senate Caucus, NOT the Assembly Caucus. Anderson is in the Assembly, as you clearly know. The two bodies rarely (if ever) caucus together and were not known to do so during these budget deliberations.

Therefore, Maldo may have shared first hand knowledge or even his interpretation (or SPIN) of what he witnessed behind closed doors in the Senate GOP caucus, but that would be the limit of his first hand knowledge. He would have no idea of what took place in the Assembly Caucus.

Regardless of anyone’s feelings about Anderson, Stone or anyone else in this race or others, it is an outright falsehood to say that Anderson did not oppose raising “your vehicle license fees, your income taxes and the state sales tax.” Anderson, and Stone as a county supervisor, were both on record publicly in opposition to the tax increases and the budget package vehicle. That is a fact.

Your continued ability to comment here will be measured by your ability to be honest about the facts, while of course sharing your opinion about them.

  27. Yes, let’s be clear and accurate:

CA. Assembly Republicans (all, including Joel Anderson) put up Assembly Members Anthony Adams, Mike Villines and Roger Niello to vote FOR the budget with the tax increases. This IS a fact! State Senators Abel Maldonado, Roy Ashburn and Dave Cogdill voted for the same budget with the tax increases.

State Senate Republicans ousted minority leader Dave Cogdill replacing him with Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth. The ONLY protest coming out the Republican Assembly at the time was Asm. Chuck DeVore who quit as Assembly Whip because the other members would not oust Assembly minority leader Mike Villines.

My question remains – Why didn’t ‘Tax Fighter’ Joel Anderson give voice or action in protest?

  28. I haven’t seen Mr. Anderson campaigning much. Do these statistics mean he has chosen to campaign on the dime of the taxpayer?

A Comparison of State Taxpayer Funded Mail Produced Just Between March 1 and April 7, 2010:

Republican Assembly Leader Martin Garrick (Solana Beach)
    45,000 Bulk Mail
    11,600 Individual Mail

Republican Caucus Leader Connie Conway (Visalia)
    0 Bulk Mail
    6,400 Individual Mail

Assembly Member Joel Anderson (El Cajon)
    148,200 Bulk Mail
    1,750 Individual Mail

  29. I have nothing personal against Mr. Anderson, but can he at least throw up a web-site? You know, the election is less than 2 months away. The voters do not want to see “junk mail.” The want to read about certain issues facing our state.

  30. Combat Sheep, so “it’s a fact” that “all Republicans” put up the three Assembly GOP turncoats to vote for the Dems bill? Thanks for playing.

NO ONE believes that ALL Republicans, including Joel, conspired as you indicate. You have totally discredited yourself (again).

And your impeccable source? Why, it’s Chief Turncoat Maldonado!! Oh yeah, him I trust!!

Helpful hint: When next you make stuff up, first, check to see see if your assertion passes the giggle test. This one failed miserably.

  31. Yes, Richard… the late William F. Buckley would say a person like “Combat Sheep” doesn’t know the difference between fact and opinion. The FACT is that anyone who says that the other Republicans “put up” those voting for the budget would be stating an OPINION, because they would have no way of knowing such a ludicrous thing. And, if they were repeating the charge based on something that Abel Maldonado alleged, that would still not be a fact, it would be an opinion based on a charge by another, not firsthand knowledge. As well as coming from a Senator that proved he is willing to do anything to advance his career, including voting for tax increases in exchange for the legislature placing an open primary measure on the ballot, so as to help him personally in the future. This is the person that “Sheep” places his/her trust in? Absurd.

  32. Mr. Rider and Mr. Larkin,
I am glad to see you are both highly disappointed with Mr. Maldonado and see him as a liberal Republican (to put it politely).

Just to further the conversation on FACT and OPINION….Mr. Joel Anderson voted to confirm liberal Lieutenant Governor Maldonado and that is a FACT.

Jeff Stone thinks that was a bad move and that, of course, is his OPINION.

So if you both have a low OPINION of Lieutenant Governor Maldonado…and Mr. Anderson’s OPINION was to vote to confirm him…and Mr. Stone has a contrary OPINION to Mr. Anderson….I am guessing that it is a FACT that you will both be voting for Mr. Stone on June 8th and then in November?

By the way, Mr. Rider…is sending 140,000 bulk mailers (that coincidentally dropped when Mr. Anderson decides to run for higher office) a good and responsible use of tax-payer funds?

  33. Mr. Schwartz – Dittos! You beat me to the punch on the Anderson vote FOR Maldonado.

Me thinks they protest too much on the 3 votes put up to increase our taxes! Maldo isn’t the only source on this BTW, but we really don’t want to open that can of worms do we?
