Another Candidate Declares for an Assembly Seat that Doesn’t Exist

A couple of weeks ago I reported that Del Mar Councilwoman Crystal Crawford had already declared herself a candidate for the non-existent 74th Assembly District (all lines will be redrawn by a state commission by August of 2011). Yesterday afternoon at the Fairbanks Republican Women luncheon Republican Sherry Hodges declared herself a candidate for the 74th AD. Hodges is District Director for Assemblyman Martin Garrick. Rumor has it that Hodges has hired Nancy Chase as her political adviser.

  1. This really seems to be a silly line of reasoning. Almost every, if not every, district in the state (and the country) is being redrawn (or at least reevaluated) as a result of new census data. From what I understand, it’s been happening for a couple of hundred years now. The political world doesn’t just stop because of it.

You could just as easily say that Steve Danon and Pam Slater-Price are running for a district that doesn’t exist. Or Brian Bilbray. Or anyone else running for a supervisorial, congressional, assembly, or senate seat. I find it odd that you’re fixated on this district.

My guess is that you’re pushing the agenda of someone who’s thinking about running for the 74th and is trying to somehow tarnish his potential future competitors.

  2. I’m hardly ‘fixated’ on this district. I’d suggest you take 5 minutes out of your busy weekend and read through my past several posts. A grand total of one post deals with the 74th, or whatever district that seat becomes.

I’ll give you half the point on the logic issue.

  3. It doesn’t really matter where the seat is I guess. That Hodges is running isn’t any surprise, she’s been talking about it for more than a year.

The real questions: how much money has she raised? Does Garrick support her run? Are there other candidates (I’ve got to guess there will be)?

Off the cuff, Hodges seems like a nice woman but I’m not sure she is a particularly strong candidate. Crawford is going to need to have the new district lean Democrat in order to even be competitive with whatever Republican comes out of the primary.

  4. What with this odd trend on SDRostra where the bloggers and web masters only want posts that are supportive of whatever is written and jump on anyone who happens to disagree or asks challenging questions? What are you all afraid of?

Not a very inviting environment for an organization that is supposedly trying to make itself San Diego’s premiere political website.

  5. ENC:
You must be the thinnest skinned commenter we’ve ever had. First you suggest hostility from us when none existed. Now you believe an odd trend exists with the bloggers and I engaging in debate? Let’s see, if a blogger has an opinion, and a commenter rebuts it, that is fine and encouraged. But, the commenter might certainly expect that the post’s author could respond and defend their original entry. Why would they not? That is encouraged too. It’s all part of the debate. As for me, nothing new, I’ve been engaged in facilitating the debate and challenging commenters since day one, and will continue. As for the above, my goodness, North challenged you to read all of his/her posts, but didn’t provide a link. So I did, in case you or anyone else wanted to do so. Wow, sorry I “jumped on” you. All are welcome here, but they should expect some discussion and debate.

  6. Agree with Thor’s Assistant: ENC Resident sounds either thin skinned or small brained.

Anyway, I’ve known Nancy Chase for years didn’t realize she was a political consultant. Maybe she did the former DA… I can’t really remember exactly. Seems a little odd to me. I thought when she announced it would either be Dichiara (Coronado) or Gilliard (Sacramento based).

  7. I find it pretty hard to believe that Sherri would run WITHOUT Garrick’s endorsement lol. She’s called a few members of the Lincoln Club already and I think that Garrick’s endorsement is a given.

  8. My understanding is that Sherry does NOT have Garrick’s endorsement. Maybe Im wrong but she’s been pimping Walters (Orange County) endorsement but NOT Garrick.

  9. Funny how it seems that district staff people now are the annointed ones for their boss’ seats. What ever happened to the farm team concept that the party always talked about? Won’t Ms. Hodges have to resign from her job in the Assembly District office? And from the Republican party position? Both are conflicts of interest if she continues. She can’t campaign on the State’s (aka public’s) dime.
