Advice to people who underestimate Bob Filner — DON’T — SD Democrats do Mailer boosting his bid for Mayor

Here is the solid mail piece sent this week by the SD County Democratic Party, a “member communication” effort to aid Bob Filner’s campaign with rank-and-file Democratic voters. It hits most of the familiar themes which should appeal to the voters affected.  One word of advice to my conservative and libertarian friends who underestimate candidate Bob Filner … Don’t.  His own party has taken the field, and the forces of organized labor are almost certain to follow.  If they can motivate the base to turn out, there are enough votes to propel him to a runoff.

…..Filner has been an Underdog Before

In 1987  he was a recently-defeated council candidate, rated behind rivals Mike Aguirre and Neal Good.  Filner eliminated Good in the primary, then Aguirre in the November runoff.

In 1992  state Senator Wadie Deddeh was the strong favorite to win a new and “open” South Bay seat in Congress.  Former Congressman Jim Bates was seen as his main competition.  Filner defeated both of them in June 1992, and is still in Congress 20 years later.  He withstood strong primary challenges from Juan Vargas in 1996 and 2006.

…..Fortune and Food Fight Favor Filner

The current Republican vs. Republican Food Fight is an ideal situation for Filner.  He must be amazed at his own good luck.

People who underestimate Filner may someday have to Join the Club with Mike Aguirre, Wadie Deddeh, Jim Bates and Juan Vargas.

Wake up, San Diego Conservatives and Libertarians, while you still can.

  1. Congressman Filner promised to end Homelessness for all Veterans in San Diego by 2015 through the use of former Redevelopment Agency (RDA) Tax Increment (TI). In late December 2011, Congressman Bob Filner was on KUSI News in San Diego and was asked his view on Redevelopment’s death.

Congressman Filner talked about the repayment of misappropriated $150 million in Federal HUD Debt including CDBG and Section 108 loans siting in now the City of San Diego’s RDA bank account that could be used immediately for Veterans Homeless with the help and approval of the State of California.

Attached on Pages 3 and 4 please find a letter from Congressman Filner to Governor Brown requesting the misappropriated/stolen Federal HUD funds be return through an Accelerated Repayment Schedule into a secure Trust Fund specifically to end Homelessness amongst Veterans in San Diego.

All Mayoral candidates talk about getting things done and working with anyone who has a good idea in a bi-partisian fashion. Therefore, all
four Mayoral candidates from Federal (Filner), State (Fletcher), County (Dumanis), and City (DeMaio) should agree that the City should take out a loan to for repayment of the approximately $200 million in Debt and Interest. With a special provision that the City of San Diego delay the start of the new loan repayments with former RDA TI until the end of Year 2020, when all Mayoral candidates would be out of office. Or 2025+ when the pension debt finally decreases.

  2. “The current Republican vs. Republican Food Fight is an ideal situation for Filner. He must be amazed at his own good luck.”

A truer statement could not have been made. Although Filner seems to excite nobody (even in his own party), the left-of-center machine knows how to rally its base and he knows how to fight in the mud. On top of that, he’s getting a pass from the the local GOP, which has chosen to endorse one of its own, attack another of its own, and ignore a third of its own. Although it is unlikely, if Filner manages to pull this one off, the blame will fall squarely on the shoulder of Krvaric and his ExCom for failing to be an effective voice against the Democrat in the race.

  3. D. Morton – Fletcher is campaigning against the people and issues that put him in a position to credibly run for Mayor. Regardless of political/ideological beliefs, you can’t trust someone like that.

Either he was misleading everyone then or is misleading everyone now. Either way, how can you trust someone like that in office?

  5. Looks like my counterpart at the Democratic Party finally woke up. Two (!) pieces of mail FROM the Democrats TO registered Democrats touting Bob Filner, pointing out that he is a Democrat and calling out Nathan Fletcher. PDF: http://ow.ly/d/Cfr

  6. The Democrats may have to eat crow on this later, if Fletcher decides that he needs a new party to mine for supporters and dollars. All in all, I think he’ll be a good fit in the Democrat Party.

Don’t expect this final transformation if somehow Fletcher wins the mayoral race. In that case, he’d keep playing up his “independent” status.

But if the race doesn’t go well, his only option at that point is return to the fold — and the only fold left is the Democrat Party. He’ll be a “coastal Democrat.”

  7. Tony,

Exactly how worried are you that your man, DeMaio, has no chance of beating Fletcher in the General Election?

  8. I have met Tony Krvaric. Tony Krvaric is a friend of mine.

Tony Krvaric is a DO-er…. not a worrier.

Worrying is for people with fake names.
