Gather round, we have a Rostra “Flashing Blue Light” special. There’s an OPEN seat on the San Diego Community College Board. It’s Dist. B and leans Republican (37K Republicans, 34K Democrats). It also includes Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa, San Carlos, Serra Mesa & Allied Gardens. But it may go unopposed to a Democrat unless Republican women or men file at the Registrar by Wednesday, March 14 at 5:00 p.m. There is no filing fee. No nominating signatures are required! Even the sample ballot statement is pretty cheap ($1,130).

…… WHAT IS THE S.D. COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOARD?
It’s a 5-member body which operates the much-beloved San Diego City College (home of the Mighty Knights) in downtown SD, Mesa College (the Olympians) in Kearny Mesa, and Miramar College (which has trained thousands of public safety personnel).
…….. WHY IS THIS AN ‘OPEN SEAT’ ?
Incumbent Democrat William Schwandt, age 80, has filed no candidacy papers to run again. Meanwhile Bernard Rhinerson (D) has filed the papers to seek the job. Tom Blair of the U-T reports that Schwandt (D) has endorsed Rhinerson (D). The top 2 finishers in the primary go on to a Citywide runoff in November. Mr. Rhinerson is a Chief of Staff and an administrator at the San Diego Unified school district, per his official filings. He was an aide to Democratic San Diego City Councilman Mike Gotch a generation ago.
……. A REPUBLICAN HELD THIS SEAT BEFORE
Republican Ken Moser held the District B seat on the College Board prior to Schwandt, so this is a winnable seat. If Ken Moser could do it before, someone else can do it in 2012. There are 3,000 more Republicans than Democrats in SD’s District B. Your Ship Just came in, Pilgrim. So Don’t be at the Airport when it Docks. K ?

Interesting, but this quick piece lacks the IMPORTANT facts. What does it pay, and does it include free, lifetime health care coverage? Anyone know?

SALARY: $10,764 a year. But this is SD Rostra, so the main motivators here are public service and improving local Education. We need new “Riders” on the Community College Horses.
