District Attorney wins support of women leaders, business owners,
professionals of all political backgrounds in bid for Mayor
San Diego — An impressive coalition of San Diego women from across the political spectrum have joined in their support of District Attorney and Mayoral candidate Bonnie Dumanis.
“Bonnie Dumanis has shattered glass ceilings for women in law enforcement to become San Diego’s first woman District Attorney. As Mayor, Bonnie will bring a proven track record of innovation, a detailed reform plan to get our city schools back on track and the chief executive experience to keep San Diego moving in the right direction,” said Lynn Schenk, former Democratic Congresswoman.
Dumanis started as a clerk typist for the County, earning just a few dollars an hour. She went to law school at night while she worked during the day, becoming a Deputy District Attorney at a time when most were men, then a Juvenile Court Referee, Superior Court Judge, and now District Attorney, San Diego County’s top law enforcement official.
Dumanis is the first woman elected as San Diego District Attorney. Her hard-fought path to the DA’s Office shapes her approach to leadership and she keeps a plaque in her office that reads, “The clerk helping in your division today may be your boss tomorrow.”
“As District Attorney, Bonnie’s been an integral part of the County team for nine years and I’ve seen her usher in a new era of efficiency, creativity and improved morale to her department,” said San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.
“Bonnie’s list of accomplishments on behalf of women is long and truly impressive,” said Barbara Bry, founder of Run Women Run, an organization which has endorsed Dumanis’ campaign for Mayor. “San Diegans know where she stands and knows she makes her decisions independently.”
Bonnie established a Women’s Advisory Board at the DA’s Office and under her leadership focused on fighting elder abuse, recovering abducted children and increasing diversity among her employees. Every day, she fights for justice on behalf of women who become victims of crime. Bonnie helped establish and lead a Domestic Violence Court and sits on the steering committee for the Family Justice Center, working to end the cycle of violence against women and families.
Bonnie’s office helped write and pass Jessica’s Law, tightening restrictions on child molesters and sexually-violent predators, making California one of the toughest states in the nation in dealing with these offenders.
“Bonnie is a dedicated public servant who turned around a troubled DA’s office by instituting a system of accountability and bringing people to the table. I know she will do the same as Mayor of San Diego,” said County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, who partnered with Dumanis on a variety of initiatives including fighting domestic violence through the “Cut It Out” program and a North County domestic violence shelter, the County’s Prescription Drug Task Force and prescription drug take back events, environmental protection issues and an annual Consumer Protection Day.
Bonnie has volunteered for Women’s Legal Services, Legal Aid, hospice and Mesa Vista Hospital. She’s served on the Boards of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Big Sisters and Second Chance. Dumanis is past President of San Diego Lawyers Club, which seeks to advance the status of women in the law and in society.
All of this hard work for our community has earned her many awards, including the YWCA Tribute to Women Award, the California Women in Government Law and Justice Award, the Women in Blue Award honoring women in law enforcement and the Salvation Army Women`s Auxiliary Women of Dedication Award.
