Would you rather…

lease state parks out to private operators, giving them autonomy to run those state parks as they see fit or…

raise student fees for community college students?

A few rules:

1- you can’t answer “both”
2- you can answer “neither” but offer a credible defense
3- try to keep discussions on topic (why eliminating one is preferable to another)
4- try to remain in a state of curiosity rather than judgement–it’s possible that you might learn something
5- have fun

  1. I am a believer and big supporter of California’s community colleges. They offer tremendous opportunity to individuals through certificate and vocational programs as well as undergraduate transfer programs.

The price tag for tuition is a fraction of what it’s worth. A full-time student taking 12 units pays just $1,100 for tuition (approximately). Chalk up another $1,500 for books and supplies. There is no better bargain. It seems a 10 to 15 percent increase would be extremely fair. The big expenses remain room and board and you’re going to have living expenses no matter what you do.

This link shows the costs across the board of going to college in California. It’s eye-opening: https://secure.californiacolleges.edu/finance/how-much-does-college-cost.asp

That’s a useful link, Gayle because it shows just how heavily taxpayers subsidize community colleges–certainly there is room to double fees/tuition and still offer a bargain to most any Californians wanting to get an associates degree.

I am in favor of leasing the parks to private operators over raising fees. Stable income to the State and market-based fees would be in order. Closed parks will re-open
