It’s not often the local Republican Party endorses against a sitting incumbent Republican. Yet, Steve Vaus pulled that one off a few months ago, getting the GOP nod in his effort to unseat Poway Mayor Don Higginson.
Vaus’ hard work continues to pay off, it appears…
Poway Mayoral Candidate Steve Vaus Significantly Outraises Incumbent
Poway, CA – Poway Mayoral Candidate and current City Councilmember Steve Vaus today reports outraising the incumbent by more than five times in supporter contributions.
Vaus banked $18,480 from 213 donors—173 of which are Poway residents and who account for 81% of all contributors.
Vaus’s competitor, Don Higginson, collected a mere $3,603 from 37 donors. Only 13 of Higginson’s donors are Poway residents. Additionally, Higginson loaned his campaign $3,500 on June 26, 2014, just before the end of the reporting period.
“People are excited about my vision of taking Poway from good to great, ” Vaus said. “Powegians want an alternative to the stagnant status quo and my fundraising numbers prove that.”
Vaus is endorsed by Poway Deputy Mayor Dave Grosch; CA Assemblywoman Diane Harkey; San Diego County Treasurer Dan McAllister; San Diego City Councilmembers Mark Kersey and Scott Sherman; Coronado City Councilmember Richard Bailey; Encinitas Mayor Kristen Gaspar; Encinitas City Councilmember Mark Muir; La Mesa City Councilmember Kristine Alessio; Oceanside City Councilmember Gary Felien; Vista City Councilmember Amanda Rigby; former Escondido Mayor Ernie Cowan and many Poway community leaders and residents.
Steve Vaus currently serves on Poway’s City Council. He created Poway Secret Service, founded the e-newsletter Poway Now, and serves as an Alternate Board Member on the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority. Steve previously served as the Chairman of the Poway Budget Review Committee, and Chairman of the Poway Citizens Substance Abuse Task Force. Steve also is a member of the Poway Chamber of Commerce.
Steve and his wife Corrie have been married and lived in Poway for 21 years where they have raised their two children, Anna and Jacob.

Hard work and sticking to principles pays off. Steve Vaus is going to win by a large margin because he is:
1- is doing the hard work involved in a campaign: fund raising and securing key endorsements
2- bringing a positive vision to voters.
When business leaders, community leaders, elected officials, and volunteers all signal that a candidate’s vision is the right one, money follows that vision.
I want to see Vaus in that set over Don Higginson. Higginson has held that position way too long, he is a lame duck, does nothing for the community and the City is paying him way too much.
He just sits back and collects a paycheck. Adds nothing of value to our City. Kick (him) out.
