Union Tribune Endorses George Plescia for State Senate

The local state Senate race pitting Assemblyman Marty Block, D-San Diego, and former Assemblyman George Plescia, R-La Jolla, hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves. Redistricting set up a 39th Senate District that spans from Solana Beach to Point Loma and inland to Mira Mesa and Lemon Grove, one that looks like it could go to either candidate. In 2012, this race matters more than any local legislative election in a long time.

Why? Because polls show Democrats are on the verge of a two-thirds majority in both the Assembly and the Senate – which would mean that we could soon see a vast wave of tax hikes that previously have been thwarted by the requirement of two-thirds support of each branch of the Legislature.

Block is not among the handful of Democrats who occasionally defies leadership on big issues or who stands out as independent in any way. There is no reason to think he would break with Democrats in raising taxes to fund public employee compensation, the bullet train and much, much more – whether or not tax-hike Propositions 30 and 38 pass in November.
