From Council Member Todd Gloria

Dear Friends,

Nearly eight years ago, with your help, I went to City Hall to make a difference for our community. It has been an honor to serve as your Councilmember, Council President and Interim Mayor of San Diego.

My time in public service has included some of the toughest challenges we’ve faced as a City. From dealing with one of the deepest recessions in this country’s history to cleaning up after a scandal that rocked the very foundation of City government, it has not always been easy.

But through adversity comes opportunity. I was truly humbled to serve as Interim Mayor of San Diego and to begin the process of restoring your trust in our City government. Among the many lessons I learned during that time, one is very clear: When we all work together, we can make tremendous progress. Together, we have stabilized the City’s budget, advocated for housing, protected our environment, and stood up for working families. I want to continue that progress as San Diego’s voice in our State Capitol.

That’s why I’m announcing today that I am running for State Assembly in the 78th District. You have all invested so much in me, whether it is your time, your money or simply your trust. I am indebted to all of you and believe I have a lot more to give back to the people of San Diego. I’m also excited about the opportunity to serve other communities and to apply everything I’ve learned to tackle regional and statewide issues.

I would also like to mention how excited I am that Sarah Boot is supporting me. Sarah and I share many of the same goals. As a community leader, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, and an attorney representing technology companies, Sarah has seen first-hand the importance of restoring excellence in our schools, expanding job training opportunities, protecting San Diego’s natural resources, and preventing crime. Hers is an important voice for San Diego families, and it is fortunate that we are working together. I’m glad to have her support as I announce my candidacy today.

As a lifelong Californian, I know that California is synonymous with opportunity. It is the place where you can turn your dreams into reality. It was this promise that attracted each of my four grandparents to California from all around the world. They never guessed their grandchild would be elected to office, but they knew anything was possible here. I believe that my personal and professional experience can help our state tackle the significant challenges we face to ensure that more people can realize their dreams here.

Many of you know that I am the proud son of a maid and a gardener who raised my brother and me to work hard and leave things better than we found them. This lesson from my parents is what motivates me every day to work on your behalf. I’m excited to pursue this opportunity to continue to improve our incredible community as your Assemblymember.

So many people have asked what you can do to help, and I’ll be sending more information about my campaign in the coming days. In the meantime, please accept my heartfelt thanks. I wouldn’t be here without your support.

Best always,

  1. Quite a shuffle of the deck chairs..

Sarah Boot announced and got Atkins’ endorsement. Then Todd announces, gets Atkins’ reissued endorsement and Boot is quietly directed to the nearest exit.

What happened to the whole run women run thing?

  2. The good news is that he won’t be contesting Kevin Faulconer’s mayorship. He was probably the strongest candidate against him. I think we dodged a bullet!
