Award “winners” to be revealed at Goldens Awards Dinner May 9

SAN DIEGO – April 30, 2013: The San Diego County Taxpayers Association (SDCTA) today announced the finalists for its annual Golden Fleece Awards categories including the Metro and Regional Fleeces.

This year’s fleece nominees include the San Diego Unified School District for “Gold Plated iPads” and the City of El Cajon for its “Investment in Microbrew.”

“The committee had an incredibly tough decision in identifying an entity who fleeced taxpayers the most egregiously in 2012,” said Goldens Dinner committee Co-Chair and SDCTA Board Member Kimberly Miller. “Unfortunately for the San Diego taxpayer, SDCTA had far too many choices of wasteful and inefficient use of taxpayer dollars in the Fleece categories.”

SDCTA, the region’s leading taxpayer watchdog, “awards” fleeces to government programs, services or expenditures that exemplify wasteful, inefficient – or downright absurd – use of taxpayer dollars.

The dubious recipients of these awards will be “honored” along with the winners of the Golden and Media Watchdog, Public-Private Partnership, and “It’s Really, Really Good You Finally Did This” awards at SDCTA’s annual dinner at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina on Thursday, May 9.

Now in its 18th year, SDCTA’s Goldens give the public an opportunity to voice kudos and criticism of government spending through a nomination and selection process that highlights the smart and not-so-smart decisions of the past year.

This year’s dinner theme is “Taxpayers on Broadway: The Show That Never Ends.” As with past years, the video skits feature numerous local elected officials, community leaders and other well-known faces, and are packed with laughs.

The Regional Golden Fleece finalists are:

  • San Diego Unified School District – Gold Plated iPads
  • Poway Unified School District – Sale of Capital Appreciation Bonds & All That Followed
  • San Diego County Employees Retirement Association – Hiring of Investment Consultant
  • Tri-City Healthcare District – No Bid Contracts

The Metro Golden Fleece finalists are:

  • City of El Cajon – Investment in Micro Brew
  • City of San Diego – Qualcomm Stadium Farmer’s Market
  • City of Chula Vista – Failure of TMD Enforcement and Oversight
